THE WANGANUI AUTUMN MEETING. A £IOOO HANDICAP. [“Wanganui Herald," March 10.1 The Committee of the Wanganui Jockey Club contemplate a bold step for their nest Autumn Meeting, the project being a Handicap for the sum of £IOOO. This is an enterprise which on the surface appears somewhat Quixotic, but on going into figures the idea is not so wildly absurd as some may suppose. A practical test of the possibility of arranging such a heavy stake was obtained on Friday, for in the course of the afternoon the sum of £250 was subscribed on the course. If half the stake can be sub-cribed from outside sources, the Club, assisted by the nominations and acceptances, will be able to make up the remainder, and the “biggest” race of the colony will be run in Wanganui. We cannot see any obstacle in the way of the race being advertised at an early date. It is certain to attract the b:st horses in the colony, and will give the meet'ng such a name as to bring to the district all the racing habitues in both islands. The patronage and presence of his Excellency the Governor might be obtained, eo as to give additional eclat to the proceedings, and then we could depend upon having the very finest meeting in New Zealand. Enterprise in connection with our Jockey Club has never failed to be reproductive, and we trust the Committee will persevere in the task before them.
