UNION BOWING CLUB,
The above club held their first sculling races on Saturday, tho course being one mile, from Pratt’s to the Willows. The prize was presented by Mr Lezard, and four crows contested for the trophy. To place the men on an equal footing at the start, they were handicapped. The vice-commodore, Mr B. D. Petrie, acted as starter and I“ e sculling was very successful considering tho winding course of the river ; but more practice must be given to steering, as, during tho races, a couple of mistakes were made by fouling the bank, thereby giving one man a great advantage over the other. WEST HEAT. Dido—J. B. Johnston, two lengths ... 1 Dione—R. Borland, scratch ... ... 2 Both men started very well; before getting far Borland unshipped his left scull, but soon recovered. Johnston steering well, led by two lengths into tho straight, and passed the post about this distance in front of the other boat, SECOND HEAT, Dido—F. Fuller, seven lengths ... ... 1 Dione—P. D. Kestevcn, scratch 2 At the start Kestevcn jumped away and commenced to overhaul his opponent. Before reaching Cowlishaw’s Fuller ran into the bank ; Kestevcn in tho meantime coming up and passing led into the straight and through tho bridge by a couple of lengths, but his time had come, as his right hand wrist, which had been lately sprained, now completely gave way; Fuller therefore passing him and winning by several lengths. PINAL HEAT. Dido— J. E. Johnston, scratch ... ... 1 Dione —F. Puller, one length 2 Both crews gripped tho water well, Johnston soon getting on level terms. At Herdson’s a slight foul occurred, but getting free immediately they were off again. At Oowlishaw’s Fuller ran into the bank, Johnston leading into the straight by fully three lengths. Once through the bridge, Fuller, in answer to calls from the crowd, commenced gamely to spurt, quickly gaining on his opponent; a couple of lengths from homo he came with a fine rush, and despite this Johnston managed to win by barely 3ft. The finish was very exciting to the onlookers, and Fuller deserves credit for tho plucky manner in which he pulled. Next Saturday the senior pair oar races for Mr Hennah’s prizes will take place. Several crews having entered, the races will doubtless be very exciting.
