PARLIAMENTARY ITEMS.

fßr Telkqeafh.] [eboii oub coeeespondents ] WELLINGTON, November 21. On the motion to go into Committee of Supply, Mr Stewart attempted to force the Government into giving a pledge to bring down a Redistribution of Seats Bill, This was rejected without a division, or without discussion, except a few words of dissent from Mr Sheppard. It is evident that the Opposition are not sufficiently united upon the question to fight it, and, so far as can be judged by their action, they are not under good discipline on any question before the House. Erom midnight until 4,30 this morning was spent in talk that would have been discreditable to ony public assembly, and such nonsense wae talked that members must feel ashamed of it after a night’s reflection. One member of the Opposition called another noisy member of the same party “A Jackass,” and another member said that his colleague was “ a man who bad no mind.” There was-little- to recommend the practice of sitting all night, as little business was got through, and rmsch was said and done to lower tho reputation of the House. It is reported that in consequ-ence of tho unsatisfactory financial position of the colony, none of the civil servants will be granted an increase this year, but some special'cases will be dealt with by Ministers hereafter. The heads- of departments are instructs iHo call tho attention of Ministers to every opportunity that occurs of consolidating oSces and reducing expenditure.
