ENTERTAINMENT AT RANGIORA.

An entertainment was given in the Rangiora Literary Institute on Thursday evening in aid of the Merton testimonial fund, and was well attended. The first part consisted of the comedy of “ Betsy Baker ” by the members of the Kaiapoi “ She Stoops to Conquer ” Dramatic Company. The cast was —Mr Mouser, Mr E. W. Thompson ; Mrs Mouaer, Mrs Kemble ; Mr Crummy, Mr C. O. Howard ; Betsy Baker, Mr M. H. Smith. The piece went very successfully, and appeared to give general satisfaction. Betsy Baker was especially well represented by Mr Smith. After an interval, a short instrumental piece was given by Messrs Hammond (piccolo) andHunnibell (2 —violin and piano). Mr J. G. Scott sang “Bonnie Kate” very well, and Miss A. Lilly followed with “ My •Grandfather’s Clock,” for whch she was encored. Mrs Kemble and Mr 0. 0. Howard gave a dialogue from “ Romeo and Juliet,” the part of Juliet being especially well given. After a song by Mr Hammond, the comedy of “ My Turn Next ” was given by the dramatic company. The principal characters were sustained by Mrs O. O.

Howard (Mrs Twitters), Messrs C. C, Howard (Mr Twitters), P. W. Thompson (Tom Trap), M. H. Smith (Peggy), and W. R. May (Tim Bolus). The piece created roars of laughter, and was evidently appreciated by the audience. Mr Aherne, on behalf of the testimonial committee, thanked the company for their entertainment and the audience for their patronage. About £2O was realised by the meeting, and further subscriptions will be solicited towards the fund after a time.
