HARMONIC SOCIETY.
The soccnd concert of the season of 1878 9, given by the Harmonic Society, took place last evening at the St. Michael’s schoolroom. There was a very largo attendance, the room being filled. The work selected for the principal part of the concert was Romberg’s “ Lay of the Bell,” which has been performed hero before. The whole work was rendered in a manner reflecting great credit upon those taking part in it, evincing as it did a thorough appreciation of the spirit of the composition. The solos were well sung throughout, and the choruses, though the basses were somewhat deficient in power as compared with the tenors and sopranos, were given with precision and effect. A miscellaneous selection of vocal and instrumental pieces closed a very successful concert. The next work to be performed will be at Christmas, and will consist of Handel’s “ Messiah." For the duo rendering of this the Society intend inviting the co-operation
of all the musical people in Christchurch, an invitation which it is to be hoped will meet with a liberal response. The first rehearsal will take place on Tuesday evening next in St. John’s schoolroom.
