Wanganui, s.s., 179 tons, Bayldon, for « clhngton. Nelson, Westport, and Greymoutb. J. M. Heywood and Co., agents. The s.s. Wanganui for Wellington, Nelson and West Coast ports sailed this morning. The manner of lighting tho French Pass, proposed by the Marino Department, is to erect the lighthouse upon tho mainland directly opposite the beacon. To vessels approaching the Pass from either direction it will show red, bnt will project a brilliant white beam directly across the narrow part of the channel. This beam will fall on a powerful double reflector placed on the opposite side, where tho beacon now stands, and sot at suitable angles. The re Hooter will catch the beam and throw it in both directions, so that it will appear to approaching vessels a bright white light on the side or the passage opposite to the red light. The Elmiranda entered out for -Lyttelton, at Dunedin, on Tuesday, with part original cargo from New York. "Writing on November 17th tho Riverton correspondent of the “ Southland Times ** says : The schooner Helen and Jane, Captain Sangster, loaded with grain by Messrs Whittingham Bros, and Instone, and hound from Riverton to Melbourne, was wrecked on Mussel Beach, West Coast, on November 12th.
