THE MAYORALTY.

To the Editor of the Globe. \ [SIB, —As the election for the Mayoral office comes off on the 26th instant it is worth while just to consider one or two points. Ist. It. should be remembered that the present position of the City Council is exceptional, and probably will never occur again. I refer (o the fact, that in consequence of the city having been divided into wards the present councillors, with the exception of Meßßre Gapes and I Ayres, are all strangers to municipal business. As no outsider has thought proper to come forward the choice of the burgesses has been narrowed down to the present Mayor, Councillors Gapes and Ayers. As matters at present stand I confess my sympathies go with the Mayor; first, because I believe him most suited for the chair; secondly, because his experience of the offico during the paßt year will be of great advantage in a new council; and lastly, because the other candidates have not shown by their actions in the past that they have any claim upon the Bweet voices of I' the electors to place them in so honorable and responsible a position as that of Chief Magistrate of Christchurch.

I, therefore, hope that no personal feeling will influence the electors, but that they will simply consider who is more suited to the office, and record their votes accordingly. Yours, &c, ONE WHO THINKS BEFORE HE YOTES.
