DEATH IN LYTTELTON GAOL.

An inquest was held yesterday afternoon in the gaol, Ljttelton, upon the body of Timothy Houlihan. Dr. Cjward, the district corcn r, conducted the inquiry. Mr Fyfe being chosen foreman of the jury. S. C. Phillips, gaoler, sworn, produced the warrant under which he held the deceased a prisoner. The warrant was signed by the Judge of the Supreme Court. "Up to the 10th instant the deceased had been in fair average health, with the exception of infirmity from old age. He wbb sixty-six years old. On the 10th he reported himself sick, but resumed work on the 11th. On the 14th was again sick, and remained under the surgeon's care until be died on the 18th, about 7.55 p.m. "Witness was presont at his death. He took a sudden change for the worse about ten minutes before he died, and the Burgeon was sent for, arriving a few minutes after he died. Deceased had never been under punishment. J. T. Rouse, surgeon, sworn, said the deceased had occasionally been under his care for trifling ailments since he had been in prison, mostly those in-' eidental to age. On the 10th he stayed in and was prescribed for. On the 11th he was out again, and on the 14th he again stayed in, and from then to the night of the 18th he was under treatment. His ailment was senile bronchitis, running into congestion of the lungs. During the whole time he was being treated he seemed cheerful, and apparently satisfied with the care taken of him by the gaol authorities. George Skaites, a Srisoner, sworn, said he waß with the eceased ever since he took Bick. The deceased never made any complaint. The .medical oflioer visited him regularly. "Witness was with him when he died. Ho did not make any remark bef-re he died. The jury returned a verdict of " Died from natural causes."
