ELLESMERE ANNUAL SPORTS.

An adjourned public meeting took place at Mitchell’s Boyal Hotel on Monday evening, about seventy persons being in the room. On the motion of Mr E. G. Stavely, Mr Herdman took the chair. The chairman stated that the principal object of the meeting was to discuss the advisability. of erasing horseracing from the programme of the annual sports. A motion bad been brought forward by Mr L. Y. Desborough, and seconded by Mr E. Jameson, at the former meeting, to have horseracing struck out, but an amendment of Mr Stavely’s—- “ That the discussion of the subject be postponed till this evening,” had been carried. He knew that the opinion of the district was for themeeting now to decide whether the horseracing should be struck out or not. Mr Spring proposed as an amendment to Mr Desborough’s motion—“ That horseracing be left in the programme as heretofore.” This was seconded by Mr H. Paddy. A show of hands was called, and the amendment carried almost unanimously. After considerable discussion on the various events of the programme, it was decided to strike out two minor events, and to substitute tilting at the ring in place of the pony race. On the motion of Mr John Bourn, seconded by Mr Paddy, the programme, as amended, was agreed upon. Mr John Bourn proposed, and Hayes seconded—“ That in case of protests a sum of ten shillings be deposited with the secretary, the same to be forfeited if the stewards considered the protest frivolous, and to be returned if the protest be allowed.” Mr Harbottle proposed as an amendment—“ That ten shillings be deposited with protests in horseracing, and five shillings in athletic sports, boys' races excepted.” Mr H. Brown seconded the amendment, which on being put to the meeting was declared carried. The secretary, in the absence of the treasurer, laid last year’s financial statement before the meeting, showing s credit balance of £3lßs 2d. A subscription list was then handed round, and about £l7 promised. A vote of thanks to the chairman closed the meeting.
