TO THE CITIZENS OF CHRISTCHURCH, /"N ENTLEMEN, —A rumor having been cirVJT culated that I intend resigning the contest in the election for Mayor in favor ef one of the two other candidates, I wish to give a flat denial to such a statement, as I intend standing in my position as Senior Councillor by virtue of election in September, 1878, at the head of Ihe poll by a majority of three hundred and sixty ; and as I consider that every person seeking public honors should stand upon his individual merits, it is my intention to Contest this Election strictly in accordance with the principles of the ballot. Therefore, it may not be out of place here for me to note one or two instances whereby my presence in the Council has been of service to ihe citizens. Ist. The earnest and regular attendance to my duties for a number of years, wherein I have been absent only from one Council meeting during the whole of the period, and on that occasion I was iu the country on my own account in the interest of the citizens, endeavoring to find a two thousand acre block of land as the Municipal endowment from the General Government, in which case I succeeded, and reported same to the Council. The result being the selection of the two thousand acres of Christchurch City Council Reserve in the Geraldine district. 2nd. I claim to have been the means of economising this year’s general rates to the extent of at least five thousand pounds, which amount would have been spent had a resolution of the Council been carried into effect, viz., for the erection of Council offices in the Public Works yard, adjoining the old water mill, and at the same time ignoring the splendid site in the Market square, which, at my instigation and exertion, has b;en made over to the City Council by the General Government for a Town Hall and Municipal offices, and is now universally admitted to bo the most suitable site for the purpose, whenever it is deemed advisable to erect su'h buildings. Trusting that long and good services will not be forgotten, I respectfully solicit the favor of your placing me in the honorable position of Mayor fsr the ensuing year. I remain, Gentlemen, Yours faithfully, 11-18 1927 JAS. GAPES. BOROUGH OP SYDENHAM. ANNUAL ELECTION OF MAYOR.
