EXHIBITION BEER.

To the Editor of the Olohe. Sib, —So many enquiries have been made why we did not exhibit at the late show of the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Aasociatiation that we will be glad if you will permit us to state to your readers (our very kind customers and friends) our reasons for not haying done so. During a residence of over a quarter of a century in these colonies, during which time we have not altogether had our eyes shut, wo have [observed that many brewers exhibit a quality of beer at these shows which their customers never have an opportunity of tasting at any other time. Of course, it looks very well in an advertisement that such and such a brewer has taken so many medals and prizes, but wo believe John Bull, Sandie, and Pat in the colonies as well as at Home are too good judges of what a glass of beer should be, to be taken in by any such clap-trap. To our thinking there is only one satisfactory method of awarding such prizes, and that is for the judges to visit at any time without notice the various breweries, and decide according to the quality of the beer in the cellars and being sent out, who is entitled to the credit—not of turning out a special brew for exhibition, regardless of cost —but of supplying the best article to the public. Until some such method is adopted we are not likely to exhibit, as we value far more highly the approval and support of our over nine hundred direct customers than we would any number of “first prizes” so obtained. Yours, &c., BATED & CO., Suffolk Brewery.
