Mr James Mackay hag been deputed to act as Magistrate and Warden pro tem. at Greymouth and Beefton until the appointment of a successor to the late Mr Broad. A Theatrical Case. At the B.M. Court this morning Mr Lingard, the comedian, sued Mr E. T. Gillon to recover certain fees paid as a royalty two years ago. Mr Lingard said ho paid the fees under protest at the time, as he was anxious to leave for America. He alleged that Mr Hawkins was the proper person for Mr Gillon to have applied to, Mr Lingard being merely under an engagement to him. A considerable amount of evidence was taken, and the Magistrate reserved his decision until Monday. The Foxton Railway. A deputation of Eoxton residents waited on Mr Oliver to-day to urge the Government to begin the West Coast railway at the Eoxton end. They presented a petition from the residents of Eoxton and Otaki for the same object, pointing out that the railway would provide work for the unemployed and open out a large extent of country. Mr Oliver agreed with the views of the deputation, and said the Government intend to bring in a Tillage Settlement Bill. However, the financial position of the country is such that works that were considered necessary could not be proceeded with now, but would be so soon as tho financial position warranted it. AUCKLAND, November 15. ImmigrationTwo hundred and fifty immigrants by the Waikato have landed. New Organ. The now organ for All Saints’ church, which arrived in the Waikato, cost £4OO. Body Found. The body ,o£ George Day, who, with his son, was drowned by the upsetting of a boat on Saturday last, has been found floating in the harbor.

Alleged Case of Religious ManiaIt has been reported that Busch, who was so shockingly mutilated in Wairarapa, inflicted the wounds on himself through religious mania, but he indignantly contradicts the statement. The Wellington Grocers. It is said that the Wellington grocers, in view of the increased duty on sugar, have raised the price. The Corporation Officials. The meeting called to-night for the purpose 'of considering the present extravagant salaries of the Corporation officials was a conspicuous failure. The Mayor was absent, and although there was_ a good attendance, no chairman was appointed, and the meeting soon broke up ; but before doing so three groans were given in a most enthusiastic manner for those who convened it.

DUNEDIN, November 14. The Chamber of Commerce and the Tariff.

The adjourned meeting of tho Chamber of Commerce was held to-day. Tho npooial committee brought up a report, consisting chiefly of the following resolutions: —“That it is the opinion of the committee that for tho purpose of revenue a property tax should bo imposed, and that the present tariff be interfered with as little as possible.” “ That, should the imposition of a property tax not meet the financial requirements of the Government, the required amount should be made up from the following articles —viz., tea, sugar, tobacco, matches, wines, and all goods on which ad valorem duties are now levied—grain as previously.” In the discussion which ensued Mr Rattray moved —“ That half the deficit be raised by a

property tax, and half by increased customs duties.” This was negatived. Mr Eobert Stout moved—“ That i£ money from a property tax be required, it be obtained by increasing the land tax for two years.” This was also negatived. The committee’s first resolution was put and negatived, and the second consequently fell to the ground. A recommendation made by the standing committee of the Chamber at, the previous meeting was then taken into consideration, and the'.items were gone through seriatim, with the result that grain, bags, bagging, woolpacks, timber, and coals were omitted from the list to bo taxed, and it was recommended that the deficiency be raised on beer, soft goods, hardware, boots and shoes, jewellery, fancy goods, wines, spirits, cigars, furniture, manufactured wood ware, drugs, and druggists’ sundries, tea, sugar, spirits, and tobacco. The result of the chamber’s deliberations were telegraphed to the Government. Ihe Unemployed. A batch of the late unemployed at Mullocky Gully being paid to-day got drunk, and had to be arrested at Tapanui. The District Court. To-day the District Judge had to hold his Court in the hotel. The new court house was finished two months ago, but the contractor will not give possession. BALOLUTHA, November 14. Mr Bobert Hogg and John Dunne were the nominees for the office of Mayor to-day.
