The barque signalled last night ho the Antarea, nine days from Newcastle. We (“Wellington Post,” November 12th) are authorised to correct the statement made by some of onr contemporaries that the repair of the Cook Strait cable will yet occupy some considerable time, in consequence of a miscalculation aa to the length of the route. The true state of affairs is represented to us as follows: —On Saturday the Agnes had paid out all the cable in her forehold, and was still three miles and a half from the Lyell’s Bay buoy. She had plenty of cable in the after tanks, hut it is not safe to pay out from this receptacle, so she returned in the afternoon to Worser s Bay, to transfer the cable from one tank to the other. This was finished yesterday, and early this morning the Agnes left to complete the splice. At half-past ten she was tacking to White’s Bay end, and aa wo write the nows is expected that commuuicatkm ia restored.
