PARLIAMENTARY ITEMS.
[By Teieqeaph.] Pfeom ope cobbespondents.] WELLINGTON, November 12. It is probable that the Government will propose a gradual extinguishment of the present deficiency instead of during one year. The “ Post ” says from certain rumors which have reached us we shall not bo surprised to find when the Minister for Public Works lays on the table a return asked for by Mr Macandrew, that to meet all these liabilities, including contracts already entered into, the completion of Native land purchases the redemption of the hypothecated guaranteed debentures, costs of raising the loan, &c., the whole of the five million loan, excepting perhaps £200,000 or so, will be required, leaving only that comparatively trifling amount available for other purposes. It is said that the real liabilities in regard to public works at the end of the last quarter will prove to be something like a million and a half instead of half a million, as at first supposed. No fresh news has been received as to the prospects of the loan, but we understand that the Government have telegraphed for the fullest possible information, not only as to the actual facts, but also as to the views entertained by the leading money authorities in London, in order that Ministers may shape their programme accordingly.
