The Board of Trade returns of the trade and navigation of tho United Kingdom for the month of August, state that whilst the imports from foreign countries exhibited a decrease, the exports of British and Irish produce manifested a slight improvement upon the totals for the corresponding month of last year. The imports, which in August, 1877, reached a total value of £31,914,411, but in 1878 of only £29,106,823, further declined in the month just concluded to £28,3?5,009. In the eight months just ended they amounted to £231,622,804, which showed a falling off of 23f millions as compared with the corresponding period last year, and of over 32,000,000 from the total of the first eight months of 1877. Tho exports of British and Irish produce in August reached a total value of £17,327,308, as against £17,303,538 last year. In August, 1877, however, the month’s total was £17,746,662; and that for the eight months £130,568,093, as against £128,364,795 last year, and £122,762,423 in the present year. Cotton, yarn, and twist declined from £1,109,660 to £979,930 ; but, on the other hand, cotton manufactures improved from £4,686,350 to £4,756,076. The exports of iron and steel increased by 45,000 tons, the improvement in value amounting to £114,416. Linen manufacturers, upon a total value of £489,683, exhibited a decline of £2300, but this appears to have been due solely to the lowness of prices. Saddlery and harness, as in several previous months, again improved, and the totals both for the month and the eight months are considerably in excess of those for each of the two preceding years. Silk manufactures amounted only to £146,012, being nearly £24,000 below the total of the corresponding month last year. In woollen and worsted manufactures there was also an appreciable decline, amounting to £126,553 upon a total of £1.627.912,
