BANK RETURNS.
The Bank returns for the last quarter ending 30th September continue to afford evidence of the severe pressure felt by the community. A reduction of £631,500 is shown upon liabilities to the public, composed of notes in circulation, £125,975 ; deposits not bearing interest, £165,951; and deposits hearing interest, £339,574. Against this, the accommodation to tho public has been diminished by £728,375, being on discounts £609,012, and on open accounts £119,363. We give the Bank statement in detail as gazetted, and, in ordoi to make its effect clear to our readers, wo have again prepared a statement of comparison with tho previous quarter s figures. The extent of the increase or decrease upon each item, and for each Bank, is shown in the second table: — Statement of the Liabilities and Assets of the under-mentioned Banks in the Colony of New Zealand for the Quarter ended 30th September.
Liabilities. Notes in circulation £146,572 loss Deposits without interest ... 453,335 „ Deposits bearing interest ... 779,437 „ £1,379,344 Assets. Discounts ... ... ••• £961,596 less Debts due to Banks 216,184 „ £1,210,780 The enormous contraction of business indicated by these figures having taken place during the short space of six months, the marvel is, not that some weak ones have gone to the wall, but that the community as a whole has stood it so bravely. The next quarter’s returns are not likely to show much improvement, if any, but after the shearing and harvest wo trust that a more favourable state of affairs may prevail. The amount provided by the banks collectively in aid of the business of the colony, being the difference between their assets and liabilities, was £7,220,271 by the September statement, or about £20,000 more than at the March quarter. Nothing serves to indicate the diminished trade of the colony more clearly than the falling off of the note issue. It will be noticed that the stocks of metals had increased by £151,594,which maybe considered satisfactory. We commend the details to the consideration of our readers who may bo interested, as the last two returns mark a most important financial period in the history of the colony.
