BOARD OF CONSERVATORS.
A meeting of the Board of Conservators of the South Waitaakariri wan held at noon on Tuesday. Present—Messrs R. J- S. Harman <in the chair), O. T. Ick, A. P. ©‘Callaghan. The Chairman said that since the last meeting of the Board they had sustained a very ■severe loss by the death of their late overseer Mr James Potts. He had been in the service of the Board for the last ten years, and during that time he had fuelled the very onerous duties which had devolved on him in a most exemplary manner. Be thought, considering the faithful services rendered by Mr Potts, it was a duty that they owed to Mr Potts, and also to the memory of Mr Potts, that they should pass a resolution expressive of the Board’s sense of his valuable services and the loss they had sustained by his death. Ho had drafted a resolution in which the other members of the Board 'concurred, and would be glad if one of the members of the Board would move it. The Mayor said he thought the chairman was himself the fittest person to move the resolution. He should be happy to second it, and from his knowledge of the deceased could endorse all that had been said by the chairman of his zeal and personal interest while in the Board’s service. The Chairman then moved the following resolution That the Board desires to place on record their sense of the intelligent and conscientious manner in which the duties of his office had been discharged by their late overseer, Mr James Potts, and of the loss they have sustained by his death ; and while offering an expression of their individual sympathy to his widow in her bereavement, they desire that a copy of the above resolution be forwarded to her as a slight but very inadequate mark of respect for the memory of her late husband.” The Mayor seconded the resolution, which was carried unanimously. The Chairman said they would now proceed to appoint a successor to MV Potts, and ho would suggest Mr Jeal who had charge of the works during the temporary absence of the late Mr Potts while in_ Melbourne. Mr Potts had expressed the highest opinion of the ability, zsal, and experience of Mr Jeal, who had been in the service of the Board for the last five years, and before his death he had recommended him as his successor. The members of the Board who were present concurred in the remarks of the chairman, and the chairman put the following resolution :—“ That, in accordance with the late Mr Potts’recommendation, Mr Thomas Jeal he appointed to the office of overseer, to hold the office six months on probation, at a salary of £2OO per annum, including forage, and to he allowed the use of the house.” Mr A. P. O'Callaghan seconded the resolution, which was carried unanimously. The Chairman then called in Mr Jeal, and informed him of the resolution which had been passed appointing him to the position of overseer, and trusted he would do credit to Mr Potte’ recommendation. Mr -Jeal expressed himself in suitable terms, thanking the Board, and withdrew. The Chairman said he had received a copy of the new Bill, by which it was provided that for the future the city would have five members on the Board instead of one, bringing up the total to nine members. Accounts to the amount of about _ £SOO were passed for payment, which terminated the business, and the Board adjourned.
