NEWS OF THE DAY.

To-day’B Issue. —To-day, being a public holiday, and the telegraph office being closed, the supply of to-day’s telegrams will be found to be decidedly scant. Aebital of the Governor. —His Excellency Sir Hercules Robinson and suite arrived by the Hinemoa this morning, and came on to Christchurch by the eleven o’clock train. The party are staying at Mr Coker’s Family Hotel. His Worship the Mayor has received a telegram from the Premier stating that His Excellency’s visit is quite unofficial. Resident Maoistbatk’s Couet. Today, amongst other cases, Thomas Gallon was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment and hard labor on each of three cases of larceny, in all eighteen months’ imprisonment with hard labor. Francis Hopkins Yalpy, charged with embezzement, was remanded for a week. The licensee of the Feather’s Hotel, Addington, was fined £5, with costs 14s, for breach of the Public House Ordinance, and the licensee of the White Horse Hotel was fined £5, and 8s costs, for a like offence ; and finally J. W. Treadwell was fined Sa for assaulting Arthur Cox at Hazeldean, and Arthur Cox, on a cross-summons, for assaulting one of Mr Treadwell’s children, was reprimanded, and the case dismissed. The Metropolitan. —Owners are reminded that the sweep on the Free Handicap, and final payments on the C.J.C. Handicap and Welcome Stakes must be made to the secretary of the C.J.C. [before nine p.m. to day.

Government Holiday. —ln reply to inquiries from the Mayor, the following telegram has been received ; —“ Wellington, 12.36 p.m. His Worship the Mayor, Christchurch. Instructions will be wired to close Government office on 12th inet. J. Hall.’*

Lyttelton Entertainments.— Hudson’s Surprise Party gave one of their entertainments at the Colonists’ Hall, Lyttelton, on Saturday night. They appear there again tonight. Hall and Newton’s Juvenile Dramatic Company jappear to-night St the Oddfellows’ Hall.

Abbival op Legislators.— The Government steamer Hinemoa arrived at Lyttelton from Wellington on Saturday afternoon, bringing the following members of Parliament j—Messrs Andrews, Allwright, J. 0. Brown, Finn, Fisher, Harris, Holmes, Macdonald, Reeves, Saunders, Shanks, and Major WiiEi. Daemonic Society. —The hon. sec of this society has received a telegram from Mr St. John, AD.O. to the Governor, stating that His Excellency and Lady Robinson will give their patronage to the society’s concert, “ The Lay of the Bell,” on Friday There will be a special practice of the society this evening, at the East Christchurch Schoolroom, at eight o’clock, when members are requested to be punctual in their altendanoe. LOST Abticles. —The police have discovered the owner of the canary found on the man Gallon, against whom three charges of larceny are pending, and who will be brought up on remand at the Court this morning. Another addition has, however, been made to lost articles at tbe depot, namely, a small fancy basket, containing a miscellaneous assortment of things, such ns gooseberries, pieces of ribbons, a pair of socks, and a baby ’a bib. For these the police would bo glad to discover an owner. Nabeow Escape mom Fieb.—As Sergeant Hughes was passing along Tuam street on Saturday evening, about 7.40, he observed a blaze of light in one of the front rooms of a house belonging to Mr Olephane, carpenter. He at once gave the alarm, and entering the house, discovered that the fire was confined to the curtains of the room, and was quickly extinguished. It appeared that Mrs Olephane had some little time previously left her bed room with the candle burning on the dressing table, and it was supposed that a child, whom she had left in the room, must have been playing with the light and so set fire to the curtains. Very little damage was done. Gaiety Thbatee. —Mr 'Ogden, Miss Beatrice, and company will open at the Gaiety this evening for a short season. The company comprises many well-known to Christchurch playgoers, and has been very successful in the South. City Council. —There will be a meeting of the Christchurch City Council this evening. It moy bo remembered that the Council’Council at its last meeting adjourned for a fortnight; but it has been since determined to hold the ordinary meeting as usual, to consider some important documents received from Wellington respecting the amendment of the Municipal Corporation Act. Calcutta Sweeps. —Calcutta sweeps on the principal events will be drawn this evening, at the auction room of Mr J. G. Hawkos, Hereford street. Cricket Fixtures. —The following are the teams for the match United Club v Wanderers, to bo commenced to-day, on the ground of the former, at half past ten punctually. United— W. G.
