NEWS OF THE DAY.
Grand Cokobm.—Mrs E. Long and her pupils will give a grand concert, consisting of part-songs, pianoforte quartettes, and vocal music, this evening, at St. Michael's schoolroom. The programme issued is an especially attractive and popular one, and will, no doubt, seoure a large attendance. Lyttblton Mayobalty.—Mr Adam Chalmers, candidate for the Lyttelton mayoralty, announces that he will meet the ratepayers in the Colonists' Hall on Friday evening next. Bishop Redwood. —His Lordship Bishop Redwood was a passenger by the s.s. Wakatipu, which arrived at Lyttelton this morning from Wellington. Fathers Donovan and Davoy and a number of parishioners met his Lordship on arrival, and accompanied him to the church. A formal recaption is arranged for upon the arrival of the Bishop in Christchurch this evening. Obscene (!) Language.—At the Ringlora Court on Tuesday a witness stated that a defendant had used obscene and bad language. The Bench requested him to repeat the exact words. After some hesitation and pressing from the Court, witness said the accused had threatened "to make a parable " of himself and his brother.
Entbbtaikmbnt. —Considering the excellent programme submitted, there should have been a much larger attendance at the Congregational schoolroom, Manchester street, last night than there was. The programme comprised songs, recitations, and part Bongs. The chair was occupied by Mr John loglis, and Mr Jamojon ably presided at the harmonium. At the close of the entertainment a collection was made in aid of the Sunday-school library. Thb Mbtbotoutaw Snow. —The following is a list of the entries for the Metropolitan Show, to beheld next week :—Sheep, 306; horaes, 131 ; cattle, 190 ; p : gs, poultry, and sheep-dog*, 52 ; dairy produce, 42; New Zealand manufactures, 112; implements, 287 This gives the total number of entries >ia 1120, being 97 in excess of tho*e for last year's show. Amongst the entries of ca'tie are a number of imported highc!a« animals, by which an opportunity of comparison with those locally bred will be off irHed. Chubs Club Handicap Touunasibnt.— The prizes will be given in this match at the club room this evening, tho winners being— Mr R. T. Searrrll, first, priz.>, £5 ; Mr Thos. Moore, second prize, £3 ; and Mr h\ Horwood, third prize, £l. The following wero the scores made, whioh prove the match to have been very close : —Mr B. T. Bearrell won 22 k, lost sfr j Mr T. Accident. —A man named Thomas Oahill, in the employ of Messrs J. T. Ford and Co., while riding yesterday near the racecourse, Upper Riccarton, met with a severe accident. The horse stumbled, fell, and throw his rider, rolling over him whon down. Oahill when extricated was found to have sustained a fraoture of his left thigh. He was at onoe brought into town and taken to the Hospital, where the fracture was reduced.
Death Cbbtipicatb Refused.—Yesterday morning a Mrs Thomas Fogarty, a resident of Lyttelton, applied to Dr. H. Maodonald tor medical advice for a baby which she had in her arms. The doctor, upon looking at the infant, said it was dead. The woman insisted that it was alive when she left home with it, and must have died on the way down. Dr. Macdonald refused to give her a certificate of death, being of the opinion that the circumstances warranted holding an inquest. An inquest will be held at the Mitro Hotel, Lyttelton, this afternoon. The Knowslby Hall.—Respecting this vessel the following particulars will be of interest:—She was built under Bpeciul survey by Evans, of Liverpool, in 1873, her registered dimensions boing length, 260 ft.; breadth, 42ft. Sin.; depth, 23ft. 9in. ; and net tonnage, 1774 tons. She was re-classed after survey in May last 100 Al, being the highest class obtainable for iron vessels. Until recently she was the property of the Sun Shipping Company Limited, of Liverpool, who sold her to Mr Wm, Herron, of Liverpool. Her port of registry was_ also at the same lime changed from Liverpool to London.
Kaiafoi Institute. —The monthly meeting of the managing committee was held on Monday evening. Seven members were present, Mr E. Revell in the chair. Accounts amounting to £4 6s 8d were passed. It was decided to invite tenders for kerosene for lighting. A report was made that one or two papers and periodicals had been removed without permission of the librarian, whereupon it was decided to offer a reward, and take steps for the detection of the offender. The committee then adjourned. Cantbkbtjby Chess Oiub.—A gene; a' meeting of this club was held last evening at Cookson's Hotel ; Mr H. J. Tancred in the chair. The rules prepared by the committee were considered and passed seriatim. Several now members were elected, and it was determined to open the club on Tuesday week, the 18th inst., when a general match between Married and Single will take place. The club already numbers between twenty and thirty members, and there is every prospect that it will become not only a flourishing but a large ooncern. Diocesan Synod.—The nomination of lay representatives for the Diocesan Synod- for the central, northern, southern, and Westland districts mußt bo forwarded to the returning officer on or before Tuesday, December Ist. Presbyterian Synod.—The Presbyterian Synod will meet this evening at 7 o'clock in St. Andrew's Church. Calcutta Sweeps.—Calcutta sweeps on the principal metropolitan events will be held in the Music Hall this and three following evenings.
