THE UNEMPLOYED.
In reference to a repeated application made to Mr March by the commit! ee oE the unemployed in Chris'churob, fcHat gentleman has communicated their representations to the Government. It appears that, whilst the piece work offered up to the present has not been sufficient to supply work for all, there are also many men who cannot take advantage of the work offered on railway making, as they are physically unable to earn even moderate wages at it. However, it may be stated as an encouragement to those who can do a fair day's work that Messrs Lake and Beard, eontractors for the Rakaia and Aehburton Forks railway, have applied to Mr March to send t'nem good workmen, stating that men working in the gravel pits there were earning 9s per diy, and those engaged on the formation and packing from 7s to 8s per day. There is probably employment for about forty or fifty men in the direction indicated. The Mayor to-day received information, through Mr March, that the Publio Works Department had been instructed by the Government to issue free passes on the line to Sheffield or elsewhere where public or private works are going on. The Government have also issued instructions for free passes to be given by the department to fifty married men to-day to proceed to the Weka Pass or the Albury extension.
