AQUATICS.

The first races of the season in connection with the Canterbury Bowing Club came ot on Saturday afternoon, the events being pairoar mile races, in stump outriggers, for prize* value £4, oonfined to members who had not previously won a club race on the river. Th* course was from Butterfield's to the bathing place and, as usual, the races were rowed in heats, four crews appearing at the poßt, with, the following result: — FIBST HBAT. Tni—A. L. Smith and G. Callendar (Dunnage, cox) I Kaka—Wardroup and Goertz (C. Dixon, cox) 2 Wardroup got away at the start, and for the first hundred yards led by a little over a length. Smith and Callendar, a much younger and lighter crew, then drew up on level terms, and putting on a - game spurt, passed their opponents, and won the race easily, with, several lengths to spare. SECOND HBAT. Tni—R.Johnston and B. Spencer (C. Dixon, cox) 1 Kaka —Dignan and CaverhiU (Dunnage, cox) 2 Johnston and Spencer led from the start and won easily. FINAL HEAT. Kaka—E. Johnston and R. Spencer (C. Dixon, cox.) 1 Tni—A. L. Smithi.'and G. Callendar (Dunnage, cox.) 2 Both crews gripped the water well together, but the Kaka was the first boat to get properly under weigh. The Tui, however, immediately came up level, and the pair travelled on even terms at a good pace till rounding the first turn. Here the Kaka gradually forged ahead, and Johnston putting on an extra spurt-, the Kaka led past the Tannery a couple of lengths ahead of the Tui. This position was maintained till rounding the corner at Pratt's, when Smith and Callendar, who were rowing a game stern chase, gradually overhauled their rivals, and at the mile tree were within a quarter of a length of being on equal terms with the leading boat. Both crews continuing to row Tery pluckily, a capital race ensued to the finish, Johnston and Spencer fir a'.ly pulling off the event with barely half a length to spare.
