NEWS OF THE DAY.
Resident Magistrate's Court. —There was no done at this Court to-day. Colombo Road Wesleyan Church.— The Rev. J, S. Smalley will preach to-morrow morning and evening. In the evening there will bo an address (by request) on “ The Natural Proofs of the Immortality of the Soul.” The Unemployed. —A deputation from the unemployed committee waited upon the District Engineer this morning, and obtained an answer to a telegram they sent yesterday to Mr Andrews, who stated that the matter would receive attention. Mr Austin also received a reply from Mr Blair, who is opposed to day labour for tho unemployed ; but the Minstry have yet to state what steps will be taken to meet tho emergency. In the meantime, it is understood that another portion of the interior main line of railway will be opened next week, which will afford employment to about eighty or one hundred extra men. Vital Statistics. —The Registrar’s return for Christchurch and district for the month of October gives the following totals: — Births, city, 48; district, HO ; marriages, city, 20 ; district, 4; deaths, city, 18; district, 21. Selwyn County Council. —The ordinary meeting of the Selwyn County Council took place yesterday. A good deal of business was transacted. The annual meeting of the Council will take place on Wednesday, the 26th November, till which date the Council adjourned. TemplAEY. —On Thursday evening the officers and some of the members of the Good Intent Lodge paid an official visit to the Rock of Freedom, Ashley. Several members from the Pride of Mount Gray 'and Star of Sefton lodges were also present. The visitors kindly contributed a number of readings, songs, and recitations, and [altogether a very enjoyable evening was spent. Tea Meeting and Entbbtainmbnt.—A very successful soiree in connection with the Presbyterian Church was held in the Town Hall, Bakaia, on Thursday evening, in aid of the funds of the church. Both the tea and entertainment were well patronized, the ball being nearly full for each event. The entertainment consisted of songs, recitations, and musical pieces, all of which were much admired, particularly the playing of Miss Carson. Ashley Public Libbaey. —The annual meeting of subscribers to the Ashley Public Library was held in the schoolroom on the 24th October. Mr F. Wright, chairman of committee, in the choir. There was a small attendance. The treasurer’s report showed a small balance with which to commence the year’s operations. The business terminated with the election of the following members of committee for the year:—Messrs Wright (chairman), Croft, Houghton, Ellwood, and Thompson. Ambbbley. —An entertainment to supplement the funds of the Amberley Public Library was held in the Town Hall on Thursday night. There was a fair attendance, and the performances of those who had volunteered their services were highly applauded. Mr Spurr’s “ Irresistables ” also did their part in a creditable manner, and caused some amount of amusement. Before the meeting dispersed a member of the school committee announced that the juvenile amateurs of the district intended giving a concert shortly to raise funds for school prizes. The Dbuids. —A preliminary meeting was held at the Waltham Hotel, last evening, Bro. Swinnerton, P.A., was voted to the chair, and explained the objects of the Order, and called upon Bro. Willstead to give further explanation. Bro. Bowler was appointed secretary pro tem, Tho naming of the lodge was deferred till next meeting, which it was proposed to hold on Friday next. Already over thirty persons have signified their intention of joining the lodge. A vote of thanks to the chairman terminated the proceedings.
