KAIAPOI RAILWAY SIDING.
The Mayor of Kaiapoi ha« received a letter from Mr O. O. Bowen, forwarding Mr Conyers’ report on tho •proposed siding from the railway to con* hoot with tho river. The Oomrmstioner of Railways states that tho siding would not be properly workable, and would interfere with station arrangements. The tangent at the river is only four chains long, which would give access to only one ship’s berth, and no room for shunting, in the case of its being desired to bring other ships alongside. But the most serious objection, he says, is that it would occupy the central part of the station yard, and be in the way of contemplated improvements, which are likely, sooner or later, to bo carried out. For these reasons ho cannot recommend Government to undertake the construction of the siding. No doubt this report will be severely commented on by tho Council. The statement in reference to one ship's berth will possibly be controverted By the fact that the Council can show room for thirty ships. This will be about tho first time the Council will have hearf of “ station arrangements ” at Kaiapoi, as it is notoriously a station devoid of arrangement, and the contemplated improvements will be anxiously looked for.
