MEETING AT LEESTON.
A meeting of supporters of the Hod. John Hall was held at Spring's Hotel on Monday afternoon. Present—Messrs W. J. Bluett (in the chair), Lawrence, Dudley, W. Spring, Wauohop, Bennie, Lockhead, Forsyth, Cameron, and about thirty others. .Letters of apology were read from Messrs Ohas. Bourns, W. Graham, and H. J. Hall, all of whom regretted not being able to attend, but expressed themselves thoroughly satisfied with his action in the House. The chairman then in a few words explained the object of the meeting, which was to draw up a form of congratulation to their member, the Hon. John Hall, which should be forwarded to him at Wellington. Mr Lockhead spoke against it, as he said the meeting had not been called in a proper manner, as it should bare been a meeting of the Selwyn electors, and not of Mr Hall's supporters. [Hear, hear.] Mr John Bennie then moved the following proposition, which was seconded by Mr Lockhead—"That this meeting adjourn until this day week, and that a meeting of Selwyn electors be called." Mr W. D. Lawrence proposed as an amendment, which was seconded by Mr Dudley—" That this meeting beg to congratulate their member on being elected Premier of New Zealand, and express themselves thoroughly satisfied with his action in the House." At this stage of the meeting it became so rowdy that the chairmaa was unable to put either proposition or amendment, and it was decided, on the motion of Mr Spring—" That Mr Hall's supporters should adjourn to a separate room,' when the following proposition was drawn up and telegraphed to the Hon. J. Hall, at Wellington:—"To the Hon. John Hall, —Tour supporters congratulate you on your late achievements in the House, and wish you future success.—W. J. Cr. Bzuhtt, Chairman of Meeting." With a vote of thanks to the chairman the meeting terminated.
