UNITED CANTERBURY CLUB V MIDLAND CLUB. The first match between these two clubs was commenced on Saturday last. The ground was in capital order, but a strong south-west wind rendered play anything but agreeable. The Midland won the toss, and elected to go in, J, Fowler and Alpo first appearing to the bowling of 0, Frith and Ashby. Fowler was unfortunately run out, with the score at 8, Alpe being the offending party. The ball was well fielded and returned by Seoretan. Allen came, but soon made way for Turner, who, however, gave a chance when he had made three singles—3 for 17. "Watson only saw three more added to the score when he was bowled by Ashby, Fuller was soon after-

wards well caught by E. Ootterill, and Alpe, who had played very steadily, was grandly caught by Ashby at short slip. So far six wickets were down for 21, a very poor beginning. Morico and Mac Donnell, however, were not so easily disposed of, the latter opening his account with two fours, which he followed with two threes. Morice_ also became busy, although he contented himself with smaller figures. The score soon increased under their administration, and a change of bowling was thought desirable, Secretan relieving Ashby, who had hard work bowling against the wind, and soon afterwards Moore took the ball from Frith. The latter change had the desired effect, as Mac Donnell, in trying a drive, did not get fairly hold of it, and Ashby again made a good catch. The retiring batsman played better than usual, although some of his hits had an upward tendency—7 for 72. Morice was almost immediately afterwards bowled by Secretan, for a useful and much needed 27. Monck and Beaumont raised the score to 85, when the former was caught at point Vy Moore. Pavitt came, but at 92 lost his partner, who had put together 10 iu a short time. The innings thus terminated for a small score. The bowling and fielding wore good, which accounts in a measure for the small score.

The United commenced their innings with Corfe and Secretan to the bowling of Fuller, with the wind and Turner contra. The fist ball from Fuller proved fatal to Corfe. Hartland filled the vacancy, but did not .play long Fuller again being the cause of dismissal. Moore joined Secretan, and some pretty cricket was shown, the bowling and Soldi." g being first class, and the batting equal to the occasion. The score gradually increased until 46 was reached, when Secretan was bowled by Turner for n well played 23, made up by three 3's, three 2’s, and singles. Ollivier, after being nearly run out, was caught in the deep field by Watson. Ashby went to the assistance of Moore, who scored quickly at this stage of tho game, but at last a good ball from Fuller proved fatal—five for 63, of which Moore claimed 35—four 4’s, three 3’e, and two 2's being his chief hits. Ootterill played well, and quickly ran up his score of 10, when he hit across at a straight ball from Fuller—six for 87. C. Frith joined Ashby, who was playing well, and before another wicket was obtained time was called, tho score being 97 for tho loss of sir wickets, Ashby being not out for 17, which includes one fine off drive for 5. 0. Plith had 8 to his credit. The match will be resumed on Saturday next at 2 p.m. The following is the score:— midland c.c.c. J. Fowler, run out 1 S. Alps, c Ashby, b Frith 14 J. Allen, b Ashby . 0 G. CHRISTCHURCH CLUB V. MIDLAND CLUB. This match, began on the 18th and finished on Saturday, resulted in a victory for the Christchurch Club by 29 runs. The _ first innings left things pretty even, there being a difference of only 13 runs. Of the Christchurch Club’s 67, Lusk scored 13 by very careful play, and Wheatley made 18, not out, in a style that would not have disgraced a much bigger match. For the Midland Palairet played a patient innings for 12, and Atack rattled up 22 in a vei/ short time. The Christchurch began their second innings in a rather shaky style, but White and Wheatley got set, and made things go merrily until time was called. On Saturday tho two not outs went again to the wickets, but after making 2, White missed a good one from Horner and had to retire. His 24 was made in a nice free style, and included two grand leg-hits for 4 and 5 respectively. Anson soon after joined Wheatley, and by very careful play they pulled the score up steadily but surely, and the innings closed for 85. Wheatley, for his 23, showed certainly the best form of anyone in the game. With 73 to get to win, tho Midland started their second innings, but White was too many for them, clean bowling no less than eight, and only _ Turner reached double figures. In the bowling department, Row, Atack, and Homer did good service for the Midland, and WLite and Wheatley for the Christchurch. White’s analysis in the second innings was 59 balls, 13 runs, 5 maidens, 8 wickets, 1 wide. Tho following are the scores : CHRISTCHURCH. Ist Innings. 2nd Innings.
