PARLIAMENTARY ITEMS.
[Br Telegraph. J WELLINGTON, October 23. Tho whole afternoon has been wasted in a weak, feeble debate on the gold duty. Mr Seddon has already constituted himself tho bore of tho House, and occupied about half its time in enforcing the claims of Hokitika. Of course, very few members stay in the House to hear him. The Premier announced this afternoon that, without undertaking that Mr Macandrew’s motion should come on to-morrow, he would give him the opportunity in some way to express his great want of confidence in the Government. The course taken will no doubt bo to move to go into Committee of Supply, and there is little doubt a majority will insist upon supplies being granted, and the present disgraceful waste of time put a stop to. Sir George Grey will always carry his violence far enough to alienate his supporters if his opponent could only afford to give him time enough, but giving time in the present state of the country and at this season of tho year is a costly process to the colony.
