To Whiti has compared the Government to the rata tree, and the members of Parliament to bees sucking honey out of the rata flowers. Ho says he will cut down the tree and scatter the bees. He has quarrelled with Tohu about the wives of the prisoners. ToMotu,ofPonehu, has made preparations for the reception of some, and sent to Parihaka for them. Tohu was willing they should go, and sent for broad, in order that they might not go empty-handed. When the bread came Te Whiti seized it, and refused to let the women go. The Pounake natives expect to get possession of the women on the Ist of November, and are making large cultivations to feed them. To Motu hopes by getting the women to obtain the adherence of the husbands on their return. The Hannah Mokau. The s.s. Hannah Mokau is still aground just inside the Mokau river. WELLINGTON, October 24. Election Committees. The committee on Dr. Wallis and Mr Hurst’s election report against the petitioner on the ground that the forms of the House were not complied with, and that the Elections Petitions Act does not make any provision for a single petition against two members. Sir Q. Grey’s election committee have been sitting all the morning. NEW PLYMOUTH, October 23. The Maoris at Waiata are suffering from fever. Fourteen are seriously ill. The Civil Commissioner leaves to-morrow to attend the session of the Supreme Court at Wanganui on Monday, in the case of Koreopa, who was unable to find sureties to keep the peace. The Parihaka Meeting. Last Parihaka meeting was a wretched affair, owing to the sickness there and wet weather. Several horses died of starvation. To Whiti’s influence is declining, and Te Motu’s is extending. INVERCARGILL, October 23. The ceremony of laying the foundation atone of the new Law Court in Tay street, was a great success to-day. Over two hundred Freemasons and 2000 spectators assembled.
