ELLESMERE SPARROW ASSOCIATION

The adjourned meeting of this association was held at the Royal Hotel, Southbridge, on Monday evening, October 20th. Present— Messrs 0. Bourn (vice-president), P. Campbell, W. Stewart, G. E. Smith, John Hayes, and a few others. On the motion of Mr Smith, seconded by Mr Hayes, Mr Charles Bourn took the chair. The chairman regretted that the president, Captain Willis, had been unable to attend, and expected to have seen a much larger attendance. However, he trusted trusted that some effectual means would be devised that evening to abate the sparrow nuisance. He felt convinced that unless the farmers clubbed together to exterminate them, in a very short time it would be utterly useless their sowing any crops at all. Ho stated that he himself, as well (as most of his neighbors, had been obliged to sow an excessive quantity of seed per acre, to make up what was taken by the sparrows and linnets. The following resolutions were then carried:— “ That the months of July and August in each year be the time appointed for laying poisoned! grain." “ That as a means of raising funds for carrying out their plans, that each farmer in the district be asked to contribute a certain amount per acre to the association." “ That each farmer be asked to contribute OJd per acre towards defraying the expenses incurred.” “ That Mr Stavely be treasurer, and Mr Taylor secretary for the association.” A vote of thanks was passed to the chairman, and the meeting adjourned to November 17th. After the meeting all the members present paid their subscriptions, and the secretary was instructed to have lists placed in the several business houses in the district, so that all who are desirous of joining the association can sign their names and slate the number of acres they farm, the same to be collected and laid before the next meeting.
