BOARD OF HEALTH.
The Board of Health met at the offices, Hereford street. Present—Mr Harman (chairman), and Messrs Blakiston, Tancred, and Duncan. The report of the inspector was read as follows : October 20fch, 1877. 1. I have inspected the locality indicated in the sketch plan furnished by Mr Knight, in which he applies for the Board's permission to establish a f ellmongery and tannery. The house marked on the plan is the nearest to the site, and the occupier greatly objects to that business being carried on in that locality. 2. Owing to complaints having been made that the milk being snpplied to the Lunatic Asylum was bad in quality, I caused a sample to be analysed by the Government Analyst. He tested the sample, and found it unadulterated and of good quality. 3. Several residents in Worcester street East have complained of the bad condition of the side channels, arising from stagnant house drainage. I have seen the clsrk of the Heathcota Raad Board on the subject, with a view to some improvement, if possible, in the gradients of the channels. 4. The side channel on the west side of Caledonian road is in very foul condition. The acting medical officer thinks it should be reported to the Board without delay. 5. The only case of typhoid fever reported since the 6th of September ult. has occurred on premises fronting on a side channel at Papanui. In this channel the Avon Road Board resolved upon laying concrete. This necessary work has not yet been done. 6. Upon the instructions of the chairman I have inspected certain premises in the district, and have reported thereon. Wm. Pearce, Inspector of Nuisances. In reference to the first clause of the report, a letter was read objecting to the establishment of a tannery in the locality indicated, and after duly considering the matter, the Board decided to refuse Mr Knight's application. Clause 4 —The Road Board to be asked to clean the side channel referred to. Clause s—Resolved to draw the attention of the Avon Road Board to the fact disclosed. The Chairman passed a compliment upon the inspector for the complete and efficient manner in which he had reported upon certain premises in the district, as mentioned in the last clause of the report. He (the chairman) had pleasure in testifying to this. The report was adopted. A letter was received from Dr. Nedwill, acknowledging receipt of his temporary appointment as health officer. Several other matters of a routine character wore dealt with, and the Board adjourned.
