The well-known story of “ Faust and Marguerite,” with spectral illustrations, formed the first part of the programme. This was a most wonderful piece of illusion, and was loudly applauded. It must be seen to be appreciated. The other parts of the programme were gone through most successfully. The same bill will be repeated this evening.

Messes Pike and Stewaet. —Concerning these two legislators the Dunedin “ Herald ” remarks :—Butfor the unpleasant fact that a vote or two in the present circumstances of the colony may make all the difference between honest or corrupt government, the turnings and windings of such men as Messrs Pyke and Stewart would be a matter of infinitely little moment, though it is certainly to be regretted that a young politician like the latter should have made such a bad start. We had always thought Mr Downie Stewart, what is called a superior person, and it has given us no pleasure to have discovered that he is no bettor than ordinary men. It is painful to have one’s idols broken, even though they happen to be very small ones.

A Boaeding-house Distuebance.—A disturbance of a peculiar character occurred at the Temperance Boarding House, Manchester street, late on Saturday night. It appears that two men who had been lodging there named Frederick Williams (a carpen(or) and his mate, Alf. Lo Creun, a Frenchman, returned to tbs Temperance Hotel about 12.30 on Saturday night, and demanded admittance, but Mr Stoddart, the landlord, would not let them in, on the grounds of their being, aa ho stated, intoxicated, and the lateness of the hour. Williams then said ho should force an entrance, which ho proceeded to do by getting on the roof of a lean-to, and breaking one or two of the windows. The landlord got up, and pushed Williams off the lean-to, which was only a few feet from the ground, and then fired a pistol iu the air to frighten the men away. This had the desired effect, and they departed, Williams proceeding to the police depot, where he reported his -version of the story, which was to the effect that Mr Stoddart had deliberately shot at him. Ho also showed several wounds on his hand, which were, no doubt, received from the glass of the window which he broke.
