PARLIAMENTARY ITEMS.
[By Telegraph.] [fboii our correspondents.] WELLINGTON, October 18,
It is understood that the Government are determined to have their Bills read a first time. They will ask' for supply on Tuesday, and if the Opposition refuse, it will bo on their own responsibility, but the Government will not allow the want of confidence motion to come on until their Bills are read a first time. The Opposition are said to be overtures to the Hall Ministry, with a view to terminating the present dead-look. The basis of arrangement will probably be that some of the Opposition members will be included in the new Ministry. It is considered that this is the only possible solution of the difficulty. Messrs Fulton, Moorhouse, and Stewart met in tho Speaker’s room, this morning, regarding Sir G. Grey’s election for Christchurch. After an hour’s deliberation, they selected the following committee : —Messrs Colbeck, McCaughan, Allwrigbt, Tawhai, and Fulton (chairman). It is understood that four members of the committee are disposed to allow Sir G. Grey to retain the seat. In the case of Messrs Wallis and Ilurst the contention is that a separate petition should have been sent in each case. The members selected for the committee are Messrs Colbeck, Gisborne, Bain, Johnston, Swanson, Whyte, and Montgomery.
