VOLUNTEER REVIEW.

A meeting of the Volunteer Reriew committee was hold last night in Cookson’s Commercial Hotel, Major Lean occupying the chair, A letter was read from the secretary of the Licensed Victuallers’ Association respecting the billetting of the Volunteers on the occasion of the proposed review. It was decided to let the matter stand over for farther enquiries to be made. A number of telegrams were read from various localities, stating the number of Volunteers who would be likely to come to Christchurch, the general tenor of the telegrams being in favor of holding the review at Easter rather than the New Year, as likely to enable a greater number of Volunteers to attend. Captain Hawkes moved—“ That after reading the telegrams from the officers of the Southern corps, it is desirable that the review take place at Easter instead of the New Year, so as to meet the wishes of the Southern corps.” Lieutenant Wolfe seconded ths motion, which was carried. Captains Hawkes and Warner and Lieutenant Strange were appointed a committee to wait on the licensed victuallers to obtain information re billetting. Captain Hawkes stated that Colonel Packe had interviewed the C.J.C., who had intimated their willingness to grant the use of the racecourse, so long as their occupation did not interfere with the racing fixtures. Major Lean reported that during his recent visit to Wellington he had seen Colonel Whitmore, who informed him there would probably be no difficulty about granting free passes on the railway to volunteers. Lieutenants Appleby and Strange stated they would bo unable to undertake the duties of honorary secretaries, as the duties would be incompatible with a due regard to their private business. Captain Warner expressed his willingness to undertake the duties of hon. secretary, and was accordingly appointed in that capacity. It was resolved that it bo an instruction to the hon. secretary to draw up a circular letter setting forth the objects contemplated by the review, for the information of the Northern and Southern corps, and requesting their co-operation. This terminated the business, and the committee adjourned until Monday the 23rd inst.
