ANNIVERSARY SPORTS.
A meeting of the Anniversary Sports Committe took place in theCily Council Chambers yesterday afternoon. Present —The Mayor (ii the chair), and Messrs W. Pratt, Alport, Hebden, Mitchell, Haskins (hon. sec.), and Walkden. The secretary read the minutes of the last meeting, which were confirmed. A general discussion took place with reference to some improvements to the ground, but it was considered that spring was too far advanced for much to be done in this direction, Mr Mitchell, in the absence of Mr Ollivier, stated that he, in company with that gentleman, had waited on the Domain Board for the purpose of ascertaining three things, viz , whether they would fence in the running ground, grant a reservation of one day against the public, and give a small donation in aid of the sports. After two or three days’ consideration the Board had declined to accede to either of the requests. It was then resolved on the motion of Mr Mitchell, seconded by Mr Pratt, that the annual sports be held as usual in Hagley Park on Tuesday, December 16th. The meeting next proceeded to the election of the ground committee, and on the motion of Mr Alport, seconded by the Mayor, the following gentlemen were appointed to act in that capacity :—Messrs Pratt, Mitchell, Hebden, and Walkden, two members to form a quorum, and Mr Walkden to act as convener. Mr Hebden moved that the ground committee wait on the Domain Board and request their consent to the use of the ground in the usual way. The motion was seconded by Mr Alport and agreed to. A discussion took place as to what steps should be taken towards rendering the College Bridge safer and more convenient for the use of the public in gaining access to the grounds, and Mr Walkden gave it as his ■opinion that it would cost between £3O and JB4O to put the bridge into a safe and proper condition. Mr Hebden moved the following resolution—“ That it is desirable to obtain better access to the Hagley Park, and with that view the committee vote £25, and that the City Council be waited upon and asked to contribute a like sum for the same purpose.” Mr Alport seconded the resolution, which was agreed to. Farther conversation led to a resolution being passed that the ground committee should wait on the Domain Board and Mr Elder, relative to the occupation of the ground. It was also resolved that the ground committee meet again this day, and make a visit of inspection to the ground. Sundry accounts being passed for payment, the meeting adjourned until next Tuesday at 4 p.tn.
