rVia Auckland.! SYDNEY.

Mr Linkwater, a barrister—a welcome guest of the upper ten—was arrested aboard the ship John Duthie, bound for London, charged with bigamy. He has been remanded for a week. Linkwater omitted to bring with him his wife from England, and, during his sojourn here, married another. Tidings of the second marriage reached his first wife's ears, and she set the law in motion. The prisoner being so well known in upper circles, the affair is causing considerable interest here.

Buttree and Gill, manager and accountant, Lithgon branch of the Commercial Bank have been arrested for embezzling £4OO. Captain Hutcheson, secretary of the Australian Club, has been arrested for moneys belonging to the Club.

The " Town and Country Journal" publishes a long paragraph headed " Triumph of Journalism." It says that Auckland has won great laurels for the enterprise which distinguished it in its many papers in connection with the opening of the Exhibition on the 17th September, the day cE the opening. It say that, " the Auckland ' Star,' one of the most spirited journals in Australasia, surprised the public by giving in its regular edition bit columns of particulars of great interest. Dr. Hector has since obtained a copy of the Auckland " Star," for the purpose of having it framed, and placed in the Exhibition in the New Zealand Court. The account of the opening is far more complete than that in any Sydney paper. Dr. Hector has published an excellent catalogue of the New Zealand Court. A vast amount of interest is taken by visitors to the Exhibition in the magnificent display which represents so well the wealth and resources of New Zealand. The catalogue just published is well arranged in classes of departments. Besides being a catalogue, the book contains a large amount of statistical and other useful information relating to NewZealand.

Two monster alligators were"captured at Cleveland Bay, and are being exhibited here. John Balstodo, a publican, formerly of New Zealand, has committed suicide.

An ironfounder named Denny, in Melbourne, has invented a new gold extractor, which miners predict will revolutionise gold mining on fields which are thought to be worked out, and enable fortunes to be realised from them.

Mr "William Eorster, Agent-General in London, has been recalled. This step has arisen from a communication received during the last two months which related to the floating of the loan in May last. Referring to the show of wheat in the Exhibition, the " Sydney News" says that New Zealand beats all competitions ; also in oats it does the same.

The Bee, cargo steamer, was blown up by the bursting of its boiler on Tuesday. The steamer had just arrived from Paramata, and all hands had gone ashore, otherwise their lives would hare been sacrificed. The engineer states that the boiler had not been inspected for eighteenznonths. The vessel is a complete wreck. At Newcastle matters continue very quiet, the police and military remaining. The new hands imported have constant work. MELBOTTBNE, October 8. Bemembrance and Boyal Concert are favorites for the Maribyrnong Plate; Nellie for the Derby. Andovor is scratched for the Cup.

An attempt to obtain a reprieve for Lawrence is being made. Messrs G-aunson and Bentare are getting up the petition. They expect to obtain the signatures of thirty members of Parliament. It will be presented tomorrow. The grounds advanced are that the medical evidence against Lawrence's insanity has in fact since been withdrawn, and that the recommendation of the jury to mercy amounted to a verdict of manslaughter. Lawrence will be examined further by a medical man to-morrow.

MELBOURNE, October 9,

The weather this morning is fine, and the ground rather soft for fast going. A larg number of horses were out, mostly slow work being done. The following were the most noticeable performers :—K.C.B., Strathearn, Secundus, Soothsayer, Swiveller, Riverton, Ozar, G-lenormißton, Bichmond, Larpent, Wild Ware, Boland, Mercury, Emerald, Le Loup and Darriwell, the latter pair putting in three miles at a good strong pace. Bertie, Margery, Sir Joseph and Lady Ellen went nicely, finishing with spirit. DeMestre's and a portion of Brown's lot were not down. Fenelly's horses only cantered. Graham and Williams are handing round a petition to be signed by members of Parliament in favor of the reprieve of Lawr«nce. The petition declares that the evidence adduced at and since the trial has established in the minds of the petitioners doubts as to the sanity of the prisoner. These are intensified by the fact that the medical man upon whose evidence the plea of insanity was chiefly rejected has since praotically contradicted the testimony he gave at the trial. The beneficial effects of capital punishment, it is declared, would be endangered by the execution of a man who was not responsible for his acts, and the petitioners declare that their minds revolt against the possibility of such an occurrence. They further contend that the jury in recommending the prisoner to mercy meant practically to reduce the issue from murder to manslaughter. This view the petitioners endorse, and pray that the sentence may be commuted accordingly. Twelve members signed the document yesterday, and it is expected that about thirty will append their names to it. The subject is to be brought forward to-day. It was in tended to bring it on yesterday. Mrs Lawrence was present the whole evening in the Sneaker's gallery t<* hear tho discussion. The miners' strike at Sandhurst continues. A number of other masters have reduced wages, and their men have accordingly turned out. Subscriptions for the relief of the strikers are flowing in freely. Warrants are out against several of the men for threatening language.
