RANGIORA BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The ordinary meeting o£ this Council was held at the Literary Institute on Friday evening, Present the Mayor (Mr H. Blackett), Crs. Buxton, Boyd, Stephens, Eobinson, Good, Johnston, Cone, and ■ Ivory. The minutes of last meeting were read and confirmed. The Mayor said that before going on with the business of the evening he had a few remarks to make. He stated ho had that day seen the chairman of the Mandeville and Eangiora Bead Board with reference to opening up King street to the approach of the new draybridgo across the Ashley, and the Board was prepared to form the road if the owners of property would give the necessary land for the same. Ho suggested that a committee be appointed to confer with the landowners, and endeavor to arrange matters. In case the land could not be got the Board contemplated forming a road along the bank of the Ashley to meet the West Town belt, which would divert the traffic from the centre of the town. Ho wished to point out to the Council that they had been rather lavish in their expenditure the past few months, and that more economy would have to be practised, or the Council would soon be without funds for necessary works. Before any more works were decided on he should like to see a statement of probable receipts and expenditure laid upon the table. The mode of distributing charitable aid in the borough was very unsatisfactory, and ho hoped something would be done by the Council to improve it. He said that several persons had spoken to him about forming a Domain Board to take charge of the recreation reserve. He thought a public meeting should be called, and the matter discussed. He hoped that in the future the meetings of the Council wouid not bo quite so long as had been the case lately, and trusted the Councillors would pay a little more attention to the standing orders, and ao expedite business. On Thursday last the Acclimatisation Society forwarded 1000 trout to Bangiora, to be distributed in the Ashley, and together with Mr J. C. Boys (through whose influence the fish had been procured), ho had placed them in different portions of the rivar, and he was glad to say that there was only one dead fish amongst them. Copies of letters sent by the town clerk were read and approved. Letters from the following persons were read and considered, viz.—Mr A. L. Austin, re work for the unemployed of tho borough on the railway works. Mr J. Lilly, resigning his office as borough fire inspector. Mr E, Denham, acknowledging receipt of borough map. Or. W. A. Burt, forwarding his resignation as councillor. With regard to the resignation of the fire inspector, Or. Stephens proposed, and Cr. Good seconded —“ That Mr Lilly’s resignation be accepted, and that Cr. Johnston be appointed fire inspector.” The motion was carried. It was resolved to postpone improving West Town belt. It was resolved to put a brick arch over creek on Bang street, near Mr Williams’ property, and to call for tenders for shingling Victoria street South.
