Amongst the correspondence likely to come out in the House shortly is a telegram from Sir George Grey to the Home Government, stating that he could relieve them of five thousand of their distressed classes, in addition to the ordinary emigration for the colony. The Opposition are making every effort to get Mr Allwright to oppose the Government going on with any business until the no confidence vote it disposed of. They think it they can secure him they will be strong enough to prevent the Government using the forms of the House to prevent Mr Maoandrew’s resolution coming on. In the meanwhile the Ministers are pegging away at departmental diving into official records. fPEB Tbbss Aqencv.] WELLINGTON, October 11. Prospecting Company. The prospecting and mining company formed at Featherston will send a small party of men into the ranges to prospect Carterton and Taratahi. It is raising subscriptions to equip the party to prospect the ranges in the vicinity of those townships. NELSON, October 11. The Wreck of the Messenger. In delivering judgment in the Messenger wreck inquiry this morning, Mr Broad, R.M., said —■“ It appears to me that anxiety to push along on his voyage led the master into the imprudence of keeping the ship too long on W. half S, course, and although I am not prepared to say the casualty happened either through his ‘ wrongful act’ by which 1 presume the statute means some act of commission or by his * default,’ which I suppose means the neglect of a plain duty, I, nevertheless, am of opinion that, in the direction indicated, the master committed a grave error of judgment. After the ship missed etay reasonable and proper efforts were made to avert the wreck and save life.” The certificates were all returned. Death of Mr Heffer. At the inquest on Mr Heffer, superintendent of the Lunatic Asylum, the jury found “ That the deceased died from fatty degeneration of the heart, death being accelerated by a kick received from a patient while Mr Heffer was in the execution of his duty. TIMARU, October 10. At a special meeting of the Harbor Board to-day, it was resolved to call for tenders for the second section of the breakwater, which will extend it 820 ft., and give 18ft. 6in, water low spring tides, DUNEDIN, October 10. The Governor has promised to become patron of the Otago Agricultural Society. £136 was to-day handed to the Mayor (Mr Walter) by the Master of the Middle District School, in trust for the Misses Wilson. This was the proceeds of a recent entertainment. Waters’ trial for arson and murder will come on on Monday, and a jury of twentyfour have been summoned. The Registrar has decided that their remuneration is to be the same as that of common jurors, three shillings per day. The Loftus troupe opened hero this evening.
