From thence encountered a most terrific South-West gale, blowing at times with hurricane violence, accompanied by mountainous seas, until arrival at Wellington. From thence had moderate weather till arrival. The prices at which sailing vessels have every now and then changed hands of late leads to tno supposition that business in that line is m a baa way. For the last few years the depreciation in values of vessels has certainly been very great. Large sized wooden built vessels particularly have Buffered, though all descriptions of second-hand shipping have shared in the depreciation. It is said that the powerful ste- aer Stad Haarlem was sold to a French Company upon her arrival at London from here at such a fif Are as places her among the list of low priced vessels, namely, for £46.000. In ‘the face of such a pri*> efor a vessel of the Stad Haarlem's class, it is v >t remarkable that “ very great stagnation such o rhas never been known before, pervadei the shipbuilding industry on the Clyde,' as stated in recent home papers. A late Melbourne paper instances the fall in the price of wooden bottomslin the report of the sale of a fall rigged ship (American built) for £9OO at the Mauritius, the vessel afterwards being put in seagoing order at a small additional outlay. To come down to smaller vessels, the case of the Minna Bell may ho instanced, sold at Lyttelton, by the crew for their wages the other day. Just four years ago Mr Edward Henty, of Melbourne, advanced £IBOO upon that vessel. She was subsequently sold for £3OO, her new owners spending a further sum of £BOO in repairing her. Falling out of employment, she was laid-up in Saltwater Eiver for two years, after which Captain Owen took charge of her, and came on to Dunedin with a cargo, thence to this port. As has-been reported, before leaving Melbourne a snm of £SOO was advanced upon the vessel. Meeting with had luck in running between Lyttelton and Greymonth, the crew took legal steps to obtain their wages, and, as has been stated, the vessel was put up to auction, when all the money that could bo got for her was £175. at which price she was knocked down by the bailiff.
