[PEE PEES 3 AGENCY.] AUCKLAND, October 8. Supreme Court. Anderson, a laborer, has been sentenced to four years* penal servitude for rape on an old Maori woman. The case against Denham is proceeding. He is charged with stealing four thousand pounds’ worth of securities from Singleton, a new arrival from Wellington. WELLINGTON, October 7. The Lost Fishermen. All efforts to find any traces of the three Greek fishermen who went out in a boat some days ago have failed. The search parties have come back. It appears that the boat had a large quantity of pig iron on board as ballast. Supreme Court. At the Supreme Court to-day Morton Quin was charged with embezrling £9 10s the property of the Ancient Order of Foresters. The principal point was that the counsel for the defence objected that there was no proof of the registration of the names of the trustees, pointing out that the certificate of the registration of the rules was signed by G. S. Cooper, Colonial Secretary, for the registrar of the Friendly Societies, instead of by the registrar himself. The Court held the objection fatal, and the jury acquitted the prisoner. This is the third case of a similar character which has fallen through here lately. The Crown Prosecutor has intimated bis intention of sending another bill to the Grand Jury, charging Quin with the larceny of the money of the co-partnership of which ho was a member, A charge of this nature ’is now going on against Welsh, secretary of the Hibernian Benefit Society, which society does not pretend to be registered at all. In the Gisborne riot case the Qrand_ Jury threw out the bill, and made a presentiment as to the hardship of sending to a distant place cases which should bo dealt with on the spot. Thh jury negatived the counts charging Reid with taking money for his brother’s benefit. The second case of appropriating £I4OO for his own use is now on. AUCKLAND, October 7. At the Supreme Court to-day the Grand Jury threw out the bill against the captain and mate of the ship Minister of Marine, for violent assault on seamen. Frederick Hudson, charged with stealing £ll from George Parker, was acquitted. The prosecutor was absent in Sydney, bnt his sworn deposition was accepted as evidence. TIMARU, October 7. Nearly 100 unemployed applied for and received free passes to Albury to-day. It is understood that large numbers of men from Christchurch, Ashburton, Waimate, and Oamaru will also be put on to the section, Henry Upsall was fined £2 and costs to-day for sly grog selling. DUNEDIN, October 7. One of the Forfarshire’s passengers died this morning. A committee of three have issued subscription cards to obtain funds for the relief of the sufferers by the Octagon fire. At the Supreme Court to-day Matthew Hawkins, for embezzlement, was sentenced to six years on each indictment, the sentences to run concurrently, Alexander Rocard, charged with cattle stealing, was acquitted. Chalmers Reid was charged on an indictment containing six counts, with having embezzled moneys belonging to the Colonial Building Society. The case was partly heard to-day, and will be resumed to-morrow. INVERCARGILL, October 7. Consequent upon the remarkable success attending the use of the phosphorus recipe, the rabbit post is regarded as at an end in Southland. Two stations have already been cleared of the vermin, and the recipe is being applied far and wide.
