Master, agent. The s.s. Waitaki arrived this morning from Aknroa and Port Chalmers, and will leave to-day from Wellington and Northern ports. The schooner Minna Bell was shifted on Saturday to alongside No. 5 Wharf. It is said sho will bo used in fntnre by the Lyttolton Harbor Board for a mud barge. The vessol was recently engaged in the coal trade between this port and Greymouth, hat her crow, being unable to bo paid from the earnings, sued for tho amonut of their wages, and on Friday sho was sold bv auction, Capt. McT.ellan instructed by Mr C. H. Williams, secretary to the Harbor Board, becoming tho purchaser at the very low figure of C 175. This sum was £323 less than the amount of a mortgage given upon tho schooner in Melbourne, the whole of which (JCSOO) has of course been lost. The Union Company's s.s. Hawea, Captain Kennedy, arrived at 7.15 a.m. on Saturday. Tho steamer left Anckland at 5 p.m. last Monday, arrived at Tanranga at 6 a.m. next day; left at 10 a.m., arrived at Gisborne at 5.30 a.m. October Ist ; left at 5 p.m. and arrived at Napier at 3.30 a.m. next <lay ; left at 1 p.m. and reached Wellington at 10.30 next morning j left there at 2.30, arriving as above. From Auckland down tho coast to Napier had strong Northerly winds and rain, and thence to Wellington fresh Southerly winds, heavy head sea. From Welliugton to tho Kaikoura, frosh N.W. wind, clear weather j thence strong Southerly winds, with heavy squalls of sleet and rain. The Hawea left for Port Chalmers at 4 p.m. Discharging operations were to a considerable extent pntastoptoon Saturday along the wharves, in consequence of the nnpropitious state of the weather. The continued to fall during the day, and the wind gradually to iucrease, the weather becoming more squally. Saturday night was a dreadfully wild one for those who "go down to the sea in ship?," tho wind apparently from the S.W., and of hurricane force breaking evory now and then across the harbor in tremendous squalls. It was thongbt that the two steamers advertised to Bail wonld decline to face it, particularly the Hawea, which would have to drive against it down to Port Chalmers, but bad weather is not regarded as a sufficient reason by the Union Company for their time-table to he infringed, and both steamers were therefore despatcbod as usual —tho Hawea South, and the Penguin for the North. Captain Bayldon, in the s.s. Wanganni, from Oamarn, yesterday, reported the sea running mountains high outside, the wind being from the S.E. He did not sight tho Hawea, so that it is probable she had taken shelter. Tho Penguin wont up to Wellington in fourteen hours. In tho harbor everything was snug, and the shipping lay at the wharves almost as easy and equally as secure as upon the calmest day in snmmer. SHIPPING TELEGBAMS.
