VOLUNTEER REVIEW.

Ai meeting of Volunteer officers was held lnofe night at Cookson's Commercial Hotel, to take into consideration the desirability of taking stepsto hold a Volunteer Review. There were present—Major Lean, Captain Hawkes, Lieutenants "Wolfe and Francis, City Guards; Lieutenant Strange, Christchurch Artillery ; Lieutenant Slater, Cavalry; Captain Warner and Lieutenant Appleby, Christchurch Engineers ;. and Captain Johnson of the Cadets. Major Lean was voted to the chair. A letter was read from Captain Hamersley to 'Colonel Faoke respecting the desirability of holding a Volunteer encampment in South Canterbury during the Christmas of 1879.' The letter contained an estimate of probable expenses, drawn up by Captain Hamersley. Afner a discussion, in which all the financial' details which the scheme of a local encampment would involve were- gore into, Lieutenant Strange moved—" That Captain Hawkes, Captain Warner, and mover wait upon the president of the Licensed Victuallers Asso- - ciation, with a view of obtaining information with regard to billetting say, a thousand visitors." Lieutenant Francis seconded the motion, which was carried. Captain Hawkes moved—" That the next review of the Middle Island Volunteers be held in Christchurch, from Friday, 26th, to Tuesday,, the 30bh December, both days inclusive."' Captain Warner seconded the resolution,, which wasagreed to. It was resolved, on the motion of Lieutenant Strange, seconded by. Captain Warner "That two non-commissioned officers from each head-quarters corps be added to the committee." It was moved by Lieutenant Strange, and seconded by Lieutenant Wolfe—" That the names of Sergeant-Majitr judge and Quarter-master Sergeant of the Cavalry; Quarter-maßter Sergeant Fox and Sergeant Hill of the Artillery;. Sergeant Buokley and Lance-Corporal Palmer of the Engineers ; Sergeant Parker and Sergeant Francis.,of., the City Guards be added to the committee, together with a like number of non-commissioned officers from the corps-in South Canterbury for the purposeof ■ collecting information, subscriptions, and generally, forwarding the object in view." Agreed to. Lieutenant Appleby moved,, and Captain Hawkes seconded —" That contingent on a satisfactory reply being received from the Chairman of the Licensed Victuallers' Association as to billetting separate committees for the four quarters of- the city be ap- ; pointed, and subscription lists be immediately mode out." Agreed to. The question of the site for the review was then considered, the general opinion being in favor of the racecourse, if the consent of the Jockey Club could be obtained. It was resolved that a committee, consisting of Major Lean, Captain Craig, Captain Hawkes, and Lieutenant Slater, be appointed to interview the committee of the Canterbury Jockey Club, to inquire if the racecourse will be available for the review, and upon what terms. Asuggestion was made to communicate with the Defence Minister for the purpose of obtaining the assistance of the Government in furtherance of the object in view, and it was moved by Captain Warner, seconded by Sub-Lieu-tenant Francis—" That, as Major Lean is leaving for Wellington, he be requested to interview the Defence Minister when there as to granting free passes to the Volunteers attending the review. This was the wholeof the business, and the meeting terminated with a vote of thanks to the chairman.
