AUCKLAND, October 3. The case against Machatti for illegal practices In connection with Dr, Wallis’ election, is adjourned. Several witnesses swore to the partaking of beer and sandwiches, but they took it without invitation, having gone into the committee room uninvited, and neither Machatti nor any one else invited them. WELLINGTON, Octobers, A Fish Market. The Corporation have decided to erect a small fish market for the convenience of citizens. The Suppression of Fires. The Associated Insurance Companies are moving the Corporation to provide more adequate means for extinguishing fires. Trade Prospects. There is no improvement in trade prospects. Everything is continuing dull and depressed. Reports arrive from country districts stating that the recent frosts have greatly damaged the fruit crops. Political. It is understood on good authority that the division on (he no confidence debate will be taken some time to-day, and that] the Opposition will have a substantial majority, probably of four or five, Messrs Pyke and Tewheoro having decided to vote for the Opposition, Mr John Lunden arrived to-day. Fire at FeatherstonHabers, Victoria Hotel at Feathe.’f on, and the old Bank of Australasia, were burned down last night. Both were insured in different offices for the ordinary value. GRBYIO WN, October 3, A fire occurred about eight last night at Mr MoMaster’s stables. By pulling down one of the intervening buildings the dwellinghouse and other outbuildings were saved. The stables, coach-house, and other erections were destroyed. Fortunately there was no wind at the tinae.-jTho loss is about £6OO, and the place was uninsured. A man named “ Sydney Jim” has been arrested on suspicion of setting the place on fire.
[from oub own correspondent]. DUNEDIN, October 3. Several insolvencies have occurred this week. They are only small ones, except that of George Oapstici, clerk, liabilities £1364, assets nil. The Wilson benefit concert last night was an immense success, the garrison hall being crowded to excess. Steps are now being, taken to organise a fund for the relief of the other sufferers.
The Swan family are expected by the next home ship. The Octsigon Fire Case. The case of the prosecution is closed. Mr Denniaton called two witnesses, and is now addressing the Court. It is understood that ho applies this afternoon fora special jury. PORT OHALMKR3, October 3. No fresh eases of sickness have broken out in the ship Forfarshire. The passengers will be removed to Quarantine Island to-morrow.
WELLINGTON, October 2, Mr Martin Chapman, barrister-at-law, has been appointed by the Supreme Court of Western Australia a commissioner to take evidence in the case of Sir F. Dillon*Bell v Wm. Qibbott.
Wm. Grant, a member of the Constabu.ary, charged Johu Godard with assaulting him. The evidence showed that Grant, while in a state of drunkenness, grossly insulted Godard’s wife, and that the latter at length knocked Grant down after great provocation. Grant was fined 15a and costs, or the alternative of seven days' hard labor. In the case of Leslie v New Zealand Insurance Company, plaintiff, master of the ketch Falcon, sought to recover £l5O, being a proportion of the amount alleged to be due from the Insurance Company for repairs rendered necessary through the vessel being stranded at Patea, the Falcon being insured in defendants’ office for £SOO. After hearing the arguments the Court reserved judgment. In Foxton people are getting up a petition to the Minister of Works to commence the West Coast railway at the Foxton end. John Henderson, the well known railway engineer, is seriously ill with an apoplectic attack.
In the appeal case, Wilson and Russoll appellants, Arihi To Nahu respondent, the Court reserved judgment. DUNEDIN, October 2. The investigation of the charge of incendiarism against Waters still continues. There was a very smart passage of arms between the Magistrate and prisoner’s counsel as to leaving out the word “ strongly” from the evidence of one of the detectives. The case will probably close to-morrow. An open verdict was returned at the inquiry into the death of Ellen Smith, whose husband bad assaulted her on Saturday.
