NEWS OF THE DAY.

The 0.M.1. —The yariod entertainment that will be given to-morrow at the Oddfellows’ Hall by the 0.M.1. is sure to attract a large audience. The array of talent, including as does all the theatrical celebrities at present visiting Christchurch, as well our old friends Mr and Mrs Hoskins, and the decidedly recherche programme, promises a treat of no common order. All these artistes have recognised in this substantial manner the views and aims of the 0.M.1. The 0.M.1. arc at all times eager to welcome and entertain the artistes who visit the town, and have, moreover, other objects of a philanthropic and benevolent character. The proceeds of tomorrow’s entertainment will bo handed over to the 0.M.1. Benevolent Fund. The affair will comprise opera, burlesque, variety, drama, farce, comedy, &c. In fact, it is a real monster programme, and both its excellence and the object for which it is organised is sure to attract a large audience. We understand that the demand for tickets is already very great. Sale op Property. —Mr Clifford sold on the ground yesterday an eighth of an acre in Queen street, off Tuam street, with shed upon it, for £IOB 10s; and the lease of a quarter acre section in Colombo street north, belonging to the Church Property Trustees, twenty years lease to run, for £24. Little Old Folks Entertainment.— The entertainment to be held to-night in the Colombo road public school promises to be of unusual interest. Most of thoae young people who took part on a former occasisn will assist to-night, and the boys from the Children’s Home will sing some of their glees. The price of admissiion is so low (6d), that a very large gathering should be secured. Arrest at Post. — A man named Engelhard t was taken into custody this morning by Detective Benjamin for having attempted to dispose of some precious stones, supposed to be those missed from the Museum some time since. The accused had for some time past been employed as pianist at the British Hotel, Lyttelton, and last night had offered the articles named for sale to one of the employees. The matter coming to the ears of the proprietor, Mr Thomas Graham, the detective was sent far. and the pianist given into custody. Accident. —This morning, the engineer on board the ship Waitangi, at the Gladstone Pier at Fort, met with an unfortunate accident. He was attending the steam winch, when by some mistake his hand got between the cogs of the wheel while the machine was in motion. His nerve and presence of mind served him well at the moment, for he shut off the steam while his hand was crushed between the wheels, and then reversed the engine, thus liberating the mutilated limb. The bones of his hand were found to be much crushed, and it was found necessary by the doctors of the Waitangi and the Glenlora, who came to his relief, to amputate the forefinger. Resident Magistrate's Court. —The case of T. H. Eeid again came before the Court to-day. It was reopened to establish the fact that the articles had been stolen with the view of enabling other charges to be proceeded with against certain parties for receiving the goods, knowing them to be stolen.

0.J.0. Handicap. —Soukar, late Peep-o’-Day, was accidentally omitted from the Hat of acceptor* in the 0.J.0. Handicap. Notice to Jurors. —The jurors summoned for Monday next at 10 o’clock, are not required to attend until 11 o’clock on the same day. Lyttelton Geating Dock. —At the meeting of the Harbor Board yesterday, five tenders were received for the construction of the Lyttelton graying dock. That of Messrs Ware and Jones for £70,844 13s 7d was accepted. Tbotting Match. —A trotting match took place yesterday at Eiooarton, between Mr Kirkwood’s well-known horse. Major, and Mr Morling’s mare, Victoria. The distance was two miles, and the stakes were understood to be £2O a side. Mr Kirkwood rode Major, while the mare was piloted by a well-known Christchurch publican. The mare led on sufferance for rather over a mile, but the old horse eventually won with great ease. The Gaiety. —The bill of the preceding evening for the most part was repeated at the Gaiety last night. Miss Loftus sang two songs excellently, and Miss KllaLo Povre and Miss Lennie Leslie were also successful in their ballads. To-night there will bo an entire change of programme. The Pobt Dabwin Telegraph.—Communication on the Australian overland line, which had been interrupted for a day or two, was restored yesterday. Telephonic Communication. —At yesday’s meeting of the Harbor Board, it was decided to connect the offices of the Board in Lyttelton and Christchurch by telephone. Ceickbt Pixtuuhs. —The opening match of the Sydenham Youths Cricket Club will take place on Saturday at 2.30 p.m. The match will be Eleven versus Rest of Club. The following will ho the eleven Messrs T. Flowers, C. Lawrence, AV. H. Smith, J. Fowke, H. Jones, C. Wagstaff (captain), P. Bow, J. Brant, W. Hassal, W. Ogier, and J, Butler; emergencies. Brunette and Prestley. The rest of the club will be—Messrs Rowe, Professor, Webber, Dunham, Mason, Forsyth (2), Wagstaff, Laurence, Mann (2), Lockwood, Rowan, Williamson, Simpson, Robson (3), Qarty, Grubb, Belgravo, McGregor, Cooper, Withers, Mitchell, Steel, and Empson. The opening match of the Richmond Cricket Club will be played on Saturday. The following eleven will play the rest of the club :—H. Wenlock (captain), T. Marr, C. Eldridgo, F. Grant, J. Fisher, J. Broadley, F. Harvey, W. Cavanagh, W. Ogier, R. M’Cleary, J. Bocket. Child Sated feom Drowning. —On Wednesday, about midday, Mr Isaac Wilson, whilst walking along the Charles street embankment at Kaiapoi, in the direction of the Woollen Factory, noticed the body of a child floating in a sump dug to supply the fire engines. He forthwith took the child out, and ascertained that it was one of the family of Mr A. Anderson, baker. Dr. Ovenden attended, and the proper means to restore animation wore adopted. A considerable time elapsed, however, before, by means of promoting artificial respiration, the child recovered consciousness. It was towards the close of the day pronounced to bo out of danger. But for the fortunate arrival of Mr Wilson on the spot the child would have been drowned.

Accident. —An elderly man, who could not at the time give his name, was admitted to the Hospital yesterday with a rather dangerous cut in his head. It appeared that the man had fallen down in a state of intoxication, and after being arrested as a drunkard, was sent to the Hospital in consideration of hie wo and.

Normal School.— Farther time being required for the completion of the improvements at the Normal School buildings, the date of opening ia postponed until Monday, the 13th instant. Cricket Meeting. —The annual general meeting of the St, Alban’s Cricket Club will bo held in the Knightatown Library this evening at 7.30 Volunteer Review.—A meeting of officers of the Canterbury Volunteers will take place this evening at Cookson’s Commercial Hotel, to consider the subject of a general Volunteer Review. Teb Museum. —The Museum will be closed for one week, commencing on Monday, October 6th.
