THE UNEMPLOYED.
Yesterday afternoon the committee, consisting of eight persons, waited on the Drainage Board, and that body having* listened to their representations, promised to push on all contracts as speedily as possible, and it was determined to make an effort to find immediate employment for a certain number. A deputation waited on the Sydenham Borough Council last night, and drew a sad picture of the destitution prevailing amongst the unemployed. They stated that 600 men of all callings were out of employment, many- of them with large families, some of them subsisting on one meal a day, and that very difficult to get. A resolution was passed that the Borough Council should wait on the Drainage Board and ask them to employ men resident in Sydenham on the new drainage works in Sydenham, and also that a committee of the Borough Council should wait on the City Council with a view to reopen the question of forming the South town belt. It was further agreed that the works committee should at once take steps to place as many men as they could find work for on the formation of the footpaths and other available works within the borough. At the weekly meeting of the City Council last evening, it was decided to proceed with the lowering of Lower High street, and also to carry out the channelling of private streets, with a view of affording work for the unemployed.
