NEW RUSH NEAR OKARITO.

Some time ago (says the “ West Coast Times”) we published a letter to Mr B. 0. Beid from Mr Zala, _ to the effect that the latter with his party had commenced to sink for gold near Lake Mapurika, which is about eight miles from Okorito, inland. Since then several letters have been received in town on the subject, from which we make some extracts. The first letter is to Mr Henry Friend, and is dated 28th August. The writer soys : —“ We have had quite a rush at the Lake, claims marked out by the local men only. There are three men at work on Zala’s second shaft. There is no gold in the second shaft yet, but they expect to bottom by the end of next week. The water is heavy, but I think they will be able to beat it. If anyone should ask you about it, warn thorn not to rush here till they hear further news. There is payable gold in the first shaft, but the question is which way it runs. It might run in quite another direction to where the shaft is being sunk.” The following is an extract from a letter from Mr Zala to Mr Beid, dated Sept. 3rd: —“ Having told you in my last letter of my prospects, I am glad to say now that they arc nayable. Also, we have not been able to bottom the second shaft for the quantity of water and heavy stones. We have decided to commence a tunnel for the tail race, and work the ground by the same tunnel. In five weeks 1 hope to be on the wash, and then if the prospects are as good, we shall have some return. If you should visit the district, I would be glad to give you every information, but would prefer to delay till we have the ground open, so that anyone who came down could prospect for himself. As soon as we are prepared, I will let you know.” It is rumored in town that Zala and party have bottomed in the second shaft, and that the gold is payable, but we have no distinct authority for stating this as a fact.
