Court this morning is seldom seen in that dingy palace of justice, and speaks volumes for the amount of litigation going forward. The Christchurch bar was represented by Mr Duncan (Crown Prosecutor), Dr. Foster, and Messrs Garrick, Thomas, Gresson, Bamford, Williams, McConnell, and Neck, the majority of whom were kept waiting for a full half-hour after the proper time for commencing the business of the day. This was the more annoying as, in addition to the ordinary cases of drunkenness, there was one for hearing of four charges of forgery and uttering, which would necessarily occupy a considerable space of time. On making his appearance on the Bench, Mr Mellish apologised to the legal gentlemen present, and stated that ho had been unavoidably detained in transacting some important business in connection with the Commission which was about to sit in Weilington re certain alterations proposed to be made regarding the procedure of Magistrates’ Courts, the question of fees, <ts. Lyttelton Drainage Scheme. —At the meeting of the Lyttelton Borough Council, held on Monday night, the foreman of works submitted a very complete report upon the extent of the culyerting involved in the proposed drainage scheme. Notwithstanding the very great natural advantages the port possesses towards a perfect system of drainage, very much has yet to be done before such system is thoroughly satisfactory. The population is found to he increasing at a rate which renders the early completion of such a work highly necessary. In the recent election very much stress was laid upon this question, and the sense of the community seemed to be that it was pre-eminently an undertaking to be at once entered upon by the Council. The question of ways and means appeared then to have been tacitly settled, namely, by giving the waterworks as security for the money required for the work. From the approximate calculation made by the foreman of works, it seems that the amount required -would bo between £6OOO and £7OOO, for which comparatively small sum an unexceptionable system of sewerage could be provided. Waimaeahibi Habboh Board. —A special meeting of this Board was held in the Kaiapoi Council Chamber on Monday evening. Present —Messrs Wearing (chairman), Mathews, Parnham, . Moore, Blackwell, Eekersley, Denton, and Beharrell. Mr Moore stated that as a public meeting was to bo held to consider the question of transferring the powers and property of the Board to the Borough Council, he would ask the Board to defer the consideration of his motion till after the ratepayers’ meeting called by the Mayor. Mr Blackwell said that the meeting was only convened to obtain the opinion of the burgesses, and did not extend to the ratepayers of the Hyreton district. Some discussion ensued, during which it was pointed out that the meeting on Wednesday might be extended so as to be a meeting of all persons interested in the Board and improvement to the navigation of the river. Mr Parnham moved, Mr Mathews seconded—“ That leave be given to Mr Moore to withdraw his motion.” This was carried, and the meeting then ended.
Burglary.—Some thieves broke into Mr Garnett’s shop, in East street, Ashburton, on Monday night, and stole about £4 worth of tobacco and cigars. A cash box, containing more than £2O was missed by the burglars, who were disturbed by the return of Mr Garnett. An ; entrance was effected by the thieves through a window at the back, the glass of which was broken in order that the catch might be pulled back. Undoubtedly the burglars knew that Mr Garnett’s usual habit was to leave the shop locked up from 10 to 12 p.m., and it was only his unexpected return at 11 p.m. that prevented them getting away-with a largo booty. Several persons are suspected. Rangioea Licensing Oouet.—The adjourned meeting of the licensing commissioners for tho above district was held on Tuesday. The commissioners present were Messrs O.
