The recent lamentable collision between the steamship At a and the sailing vessel Brenhilda, which caused the loss of the steamer with seventy lives, is to be the subject of special inquiry before the High Court at Calcutta, The result of the inquiry held by the police magistrate and two nautical assessors has not transpired, but it is believed that the Court has entirely exonerated the Ava and found that the whole blame lay with the Brenhilda. It would appear, however, that the local Government is not satisfied with this decision, for on Thursday the AdvocateGeneral applied to the High Court for and obtained an order that an investigation should be made into the conduct and competency of the second mate of the Ava, who was in charge of the vessel at the time of the collision, and of the officers of the Brenhilda. This investigation, fixed for the 22nd, will be watched with much interest by the public, the collision having caused a deep sensation, both on account of the great loss of life which attended) it, and because the steamer which foundered belonged to one of the great Indian mail and passenger companies.
