It has been >umored for some time that Government have been assisting, if not wholly paying tho election expenses of Ministerial candidates, but there is no longer any doubt about it now. It is quite true that any candidate who would contest the country distriots in the Government interest would have had his expenses. In one case, at any rate, the offer was refused. It appears that the Government used all their influence to secure the defeat of Mr Ormond for Olive, to attain which Colonel Whitmore was working might and main for tho last few weeks, and it was moreover counted upon that the Maori vote would return Mr Sheehan.
The people in this district and city, who »•} first almost worshipped SirG. Grey, have now turned quite the other way, and his name is considered a synonym for trickery and corruption, and fears are expresse' 1 that, if he should return in equal it." r^* 1 ' * the Opposition, he will soon secure , ijority by the same means that he ii.o Thames and the West Coast of the Mida.t/ Island. Railways can be promised, f they cannot be obtained in a reputable manner, which is good enough for parish politicians. Private advices from the North state that on one occasion, when Mr Seymour George was addressing a body of electors, he said that in the event of certain things not being obtained, they would endeavour to obtain separation. Sir G. Grey, who was present, made no sign.
