AGEICULTURAL AND PASTORAL ASSOCIATION

The monthly meeting of this association was held yesterday afternoon, there being present— Mr J. T, Ford (president), Messrs A. Duncan, W. Norman, J. Beans, A. W. Money, \V. Boag, J. E. Kill, J. Anderson, junr , J. Mann, S. Garforth, T. Bruce, TV. Gilmonr, E. Sutherland, J. M‘Beath, E. Wilson, the Hon. J. Hall, and W. Henderson.

Mr James Torrance wrote asking leave to have an auction sale of his horses at the horse parade. It was decided to allow owners of horses the privilege of disposing of their horses by auction on the association grounds, immediately after the horse parade, and that the charge for such privilege be ten shillings to be paid to the secretary at time of entry, and owners might enter their horses for sale up to one o’clock on the day of parade on payment of ill. The judges and marshals for the forthcoming show were appointed. Dr. von Haast presented to the association a copy of his book on the “ Geology of Canterbury.” Mr Wilkin moved in accordance with notice given—“ ‘ That a new prize in draught stock be be instituted, to bs called the‘‘Oaks Sweepstakes,” for yearling fillies to be shewn at the annual show in 1880.’ ‘ That nominations for the same be received up to Ist January, 1880, inclusive.’ ‘ That the fee at nomination be ill, and that the usual entry fees be charged at the proper time.’ ‘ That the whole of the nomination fees be give in prizes to the class, with or without such additional sum from ordinary funds as the committee may determine.’_ * That no nomination be received unless it contains a minute description of color, markings, peculiarities and pedigree of the filly nominated.’ ‘That before the judging of this class takes place, a sub committee should examine each entry to test the accuracy of the description given at time of nomination, and that any filly not corresponding with the description given bo beemed ineligible and thrown out of the class.’ ”

It wa3 suggested that they might afterwards have prizes for two and three-year-olds. The motion was seconded by Mr Money, and carried.

A discussion took place regarding the judging of horses taking two days, some members urging that owners of valuable mares with foals did not care to take them to the grounds for two consecutive days. No resolution was moved on the subject, the chairman pointing out that they could not please everyone, and it would be unfair to the public for the exhibits to be removed before the show w.is over. An improvement in cattle pens was suggested, and on the motion of Mr Duncan it was resolved—“ That the ground and finance committee, with Mr Sutherland, take into consideration the advisability of putting up as many boxes as they can find funds for.” The Horticultural Society applied for leave to hold its meetings in the rooms of the Association, and consideration was deferred until inquiries had been made, in order to ascertain what arrangements could be come to. Messrs Duncan, McLaren, and Alfred Jones were enrolled members of the Association. A'.counts to the amount of .£79 6s having been passed for payment, tho meeting adjourned.
