BOARD OF EDUCATION.

The ordinary meeting of the North Canterbury Board of Education was held yesterday afternoon. Present —Mr Inglia (chairman) and Messrs Tancred, Webb, Duncan, Montgomery, and the Kev. Chas. Eraser. The minutes of the last meeting wore read and confirmed. The Secretary road a statement of the chairman’s action during the fortnight, and a resolution was passed approving thereof. The inspector’s report for August was laid upon the table. A circular was received from the Education Department, drawing attention to various matters in connection with school management. Several copies were received for distribution. A communication was also received from the Education Department, conveying directions as to how the quarterly returns should be made out. A letter was received from the Christchurch Bast school committee, enclosing the resignation of Wm. Harley, pupil teacher. The Board agreed to release him from his engagement. A similar application from Miss Fielder, of the Lyttelton school was agreed to. The Chairman stated that the next business was the election of a member to fill the vacancy caused by Mr Wason leaving the Ashburton High School Board as one of this Board’s representatives. A letter was read from the Ashburton County Council, notifying the resignation of Mr Wason, and requesting the Board to take the necessary steps to fill up the vacancy. After some discussion, it was resolved that the consideration of this matter be deferred till next meeting. A letter was received from Mr Thomas Search, asking the Board’s permission for his son, Ernest Searell, to attend the Oust school for a few months, while he was also under private tuition, in order to prepare for another examination. The application was granted. A number of tenders for repairs, &e., to various schools, wore received and considered. Applications from various school committees for repairs to school buildings, and other matters of a purely routine character having been dealt with, the Board went into committee.
