The Colonial Secretary of New South Wales has writen to the Colonial Secretary of New Zealand, requesting him to cause the members of the new Parliament of New Zealand to be informed that complimentary season tickets to the Exhibition will be issued to all members arriving in Sydney. Overcrowding of Trucks. The attention of the railway authorities has been directed te the overcrowding of the sheep trucks. The Sparrow Huisance. Some of the Hutt settlers complain of the damage to the crops done by the sparrows. One person said the birds had destroyed four acres of oats on his farm. Football. The Nelson footballers will send a team over here the latter end of next month to play the/victorious team. AUCKLAND, September 4. Electoral. Sir G-eorge Grey leaves for Lyttelton direct to-morrow, and will bo there before the Ohristehurch election. - Mr Moss, a Government supporter, has been returned unopposed for Farnell. From a correspondent it appears that Major Wills, the successful candidate for Bankitikei, is a staunch Oppositionist. Mr McLean, the defeated candidate, ran on the Grey ticket, and the Ministry were led to believe that his election was certain. Even yesterday morning a telegram was sent to Colonel Whitmore, stating that Mr McLean's election was safe. Those somewhat acquainted with public feeling on the West Coast look on the result of the Bangitikei election as a fair indication of how the Wanganui eloction will go. Although Messrs Ballance and Bryce got the show of hands at the Wanganui nomination, the great bulk of the country settlers will vote for Sir W. Fox. DUNEDIN, September 4. Tho number of votes recorded remain unaltered for the' city election. All the candidates made short addi esses. Mr Beeves aniounced that he would contest the next election. The greatest interest u felt in the Fort election. Both sides are straining every nerve, but it is generally believed that Macandrew will have a very small majority. Mr Green addressed a large meeting at Fort last night, receiving a vote of confidence by a large majority. Electoral. INVEBOABGILL, September 4. Tho official declaration of the poll is— Bain, 305 ; Feldwick, 295 ; and Bain is declared duly elected. The polling for Wallace is going on today. A number of Invercargill men are gone to Lumsden to record their votes. It is believed that it will be a very close affair between the three candidates. Electoral. AMBERLEY, September 4. Messrs Moorhouse, Fendall, and Cunningham were nominated to-day. The show of hands was —Moorhouse, 27; Fendall, 18 ; Cunningham, 4. Mr Moorhouse's election is considered certain. AUCKLAND, September 3. Latest news from the Bay of Islands states that there are four Natives killed and one wounded, it is feared mortally, and three others are wounded seriously. The bodies will be recovered to-day. The Natives will shortly hold a meeting tojconsider the matter, when they may decide to seek revenge. None of the men killed were of high rank. Both : parties in the dispute are strongly backed. Cole, who appeared as complainant in the charge of cruelty against Captain Murphy of the Minister of .Marine, has now laid an information for assault agaiuct the second mate, , who he alleges has persistently endeavored to excite him to break the peace since the recent prosecution. ' The Georgia Minstrels have been engaged to appear here seven nights. WELLINGTON, September 3. The City Council are considering the question of laying down new water mains in the ] principal streets of the city, of such size as will ultimately fit in with the Wainui-o-mata water scheme. The German residents of Wellington commemorated last night the battle of Sedan, by
a ball and supper. About 150 were present. Mr Krull, Gorman Consul, was in the chair, and paid a graceful tribute to the bravery of the French people. Hearty cheers greeted the two Frenchmen who acknowledged the compliment. One of them, an A.O. man, was at the battle of Sedan, and the other had fought in the Franco-German war. It is intended shcrtly to form a German Society. A golden wedding waa celebrated in town to-day. The couple are named Heans, and are oyer seventy. The Port Nicholson Olub had another narrow escape from fire to-night a few minutes before eight. This is the seoond occurrence of the same kind. A fatal accident occurred at the Moutere, ■when Albert Beasmann, son of Mr John Beasmann, waa killed on tho spot by a branch of a tree ftiling on his head whilst engaged in the bush.
Tho Public Works department have determined to proceed at once with the erection of a drillshei at Mount Cook. DTJNEDIN, September 3. A fatal gun accident happened to a young man named Peter Weddorspoon at Mosgiel on Monday. While he was reloading one barrel the other exploded, lodging the contents in his thigh. A six-roomed house at Carey's Bay, owned and occupied by Chas. Jacobsen, was totally destroyed by fire this morning. Only a few articles of furniture were saved. The fire is supposed to have originated through some articles of clothing being left in front of the kitchen firo. The house was insured in the : National for £2OO, and the furniture for £iOO. '•' '
